Local differences between the followers of Lloyd George and the followers of Asquith led to the nomination of two Liberal candidates, Algernon Moreing being the nominee of the Lloyd George Liberals and the local Conservative Association, Rt Hon Leifchild Jones being backed by supporters of Asquith who had formed a committee known as the Liberal 600. Moreing's name also appeared on the official list of Conservative candidates. The United Liberal Committee in London which had been formed to assist in selecting candidates and bring the two wings of the Liberal Party together declared its neutrality during the campaign after it had failed to obtain local agreement.

Thomas Newbold stated that he was standing as an Independent and, if elected, his main endeavour would be devoted to the welfare of ex-servicemen. The circumstances surrounding his candidature are obscure but he did admit that there were several Conservatives among his sponsors and it appears probable that he had the backing of a number of Conservative supporters in Derby who felt that their party should have contested both seats. The day following his nomination, a meeting of the Full Street Branch of the British Legion in Derby adopted Newbold as their candidate by 25 votes to 7 with 4 abstentions. It was stated that, due to the lack of time before polling day, it would not be possible for other British Legion branches in Derby to consider the question of supporting Newbold. Following this meeting several members resigned and complained that the adoption of Newbold was unconstitutional and undemocratic.
