Local differences between the followers of Lloyd George and the followers of Asquith led to the nomination of two Liberal candidates, Algernon Moreing being the nominee of the Lloyd George Liberals and the local Conservative Association, Rt Hon Leifchild Jones being backed by supporters of Asquith who had formed a committee known as the Liberal 600. Moreing's name also appeared on the official list of Conservative candidates. The United Liberal Committee in London which had been formed to assist in selecting candidates and bring the two wings of the Liberal Party together declared its neutrality during the campaign after it had failed to obtain local agreement. | |||
