3 December 1915 William Walker owned a stud of thoroughbred horses. He gifted these to the nation in order to start a national stud and maintain the supply of horses to the army. It was thought advisable that the nation should also acquire some of his properties in Ireland and Wiltshire and he agreed to sell these at a price to be fixed by a government valuer. As the sale of his properties would have involved him in a government contract, he resigned his seat at the outset and the new writ was not moved until the legal formalities had been completed and he could seek re-election.
