Dame Margaret Oudendyk  [Hon DBE 1918 and DBE 1949]
The following article appeared in "The Times" on 10 November 1971:-
"Dame Margaret Oudendyk, DBE, who has died at the age of 95, was the widow of Willem Oudendyk, a distinguished
member of the Dutch diplomatic service and a good friend to Britain. He died in 1953.
"He was sent to Petrograd as temporary Minister during the Russian Revolution of 1917-18. In his capacity as Minister of a
neutral country he and his wife were able to render great service, often at considerable risk to themselves, to a number
of unfortunate British subjects imprisoned after the Revolution at Moscow and Petrograd. In 1918 when on a visit to Britain
they were asked to luncheon with King George V and Queen Mary at Buckingham Palace: the only other guests being the
Princess Royal and the Duke of York, later George VI. At the end of the meal the King conferred an honorary KCMG on
Oudendyk and an honorary DBE on his wife in recognition of their help to British subjects.
"She was born Margaret Fuller, the daughter of Edmond Fuller and she met her future husband at Teheran in 1911 where
she was a guest of the British Minister, Sir George Barclay. They were married the same year. She was created [a
substantive] DBE in 1949."
Sir William Christopher Pakenham  [KCB 1916, KCVO 1917, KCMG 1919 and GCB 1925]

The following biography of Sir William Pakenham appeared in the September 1963 issue of the Australian monthly magazine
"Parade":-
"On April 22, 1916, during World War I, nine British battle cruisers steamed in line abreast off Horn Reef, near the coast of
Jutland. Because German submarines were a constant menace in the North Sea, the ships zig-zagged, changing course
either on a signal from Admiral Sir David Beatty in the flagship Lion, or, if signals were not visible, at 10-minute intervals.
Shortly before dark the squadron ran into a patch of fog obscuring the Lion from HMAS Australia, which flew the flag of
Rear-Admiral William Pakenham, commander of the port wing. Pakenham followed Beatty's instructions and ordered the
course changed by the clock. On the other hand, Captain Green of the New Zealand waited for the flagship's signal
because he could still see her lights. With the ponderous battle cruisers plunging through the gloom at 25 knots, the margin
of safety was small. Suddenly officers on the New Zealand's bridge saw HMAS Australia loom out of the fog. Masterly sea-
manship averted a bow-to-midships collision, but nothing could be done to prevent the two battle cruisers crashing
broadside-on, with severe damage to the Australia.

"The next morning officers of both ships involved in the collision were summoned aboard HMS Lion to give evidence at an
enquiry. But before any questions were asked, Admiral Pakenham halted the proceedings by submitting that no witnesses
were needed. If two ships in the squadron under his command collided when he was present, he said, he alone was to
blame. He would hotly resent any attempt to involve his subordinates. Because Pakenham was one of the ablest officers
afloat, his attitude perplexed the court of inquiry. Then Admiral Beatty took a hand. Obviously, he said, his orders as
commander-in-chief had been ambiguous and the responsibility must fall on him. As the court was not prepared to censure
the commander-in-chief, the matter was closed. A few weeks later the Battle of Jutland was fought. HMAS Australia was
not there. Instead she was undergoing repairs at Rosyth.

"Pakenham's generous attitude was typical of the man who, throughout his long career, held firmly to the principle that the
man on top must share out the honours and take all the blame. Born in 1861, William Christopher Pakenham entered the
navy at the age of 13 when steam engines were still regarded as dirty and dangerous adjuncts to the wind. As a midship-
man in the frigate Raleigh he risked his life to save a seaman who had fallen overboard off Cyprus. A little later he repeated
the feat in Kiel Harbour, thus earning two Admiralty commendations in his first year at sea. Even as a junior officer,
Pakenham scarcely conformed to the usual naval type. He carried a library of Greek and Latin poetry and histories which he
read in the original texts. He also studied modern languages. By the time he was 30, he was fluent in French, German and
Italian. He also mastered Japanese. His knowledge of profanity was equally extensive. He could use the most appalling
words with such punctilious courtesy that they sounded like compliments.

"In 1883, when he was 22, Pakenham was chosen as flag-lieutenant by Admiral Sir George Tryon, commander of what was
then known as the Australian Squadron. An ill-fated officer, Tryon subsequently lost his life in the Mediterranean when his
flagship, HMS Victoria, was rammed by the Camperdown during exercises [for further information, see the note at the foot
of the page contained details of Baron Tryon]. The officers of his squadron were social lions in Sydney and Melbourne, but
hostesses found the handsome young flag-lieutenant a disappointment. Parties bored him, he drank nothing stronger than
fruit juice and spent most of his time studying the naval problems of the Pacific. It was he who supported Tryon with
ammunition with which to blast the British Government's ignorance of the naval situation in Australia, New Zealand and the
islands. Tryon's reports, which called for stronger naval forces in Australian waters, eventually had an important bearing
on the formation of the Royal Australian Navy a quarter of a century later.

"Notorious for the polished insolence with which he could cut an incompetent senior down to size, Pakenham was a naval
legend before he became a captain. When he was a commander, he was appointed to a ship whose captain was well
known as a muddler. Finding his orders being countermanded from the bridge, Pakenham settled matters by shouting
through a megaphone: "This is very strange. Could there possibly be two commanders in this ship?" Even admirals were
immune. Once when he was a captain an unpopular commander-in-chief transferred his flag temporarily to Pakenham's ship.
Pakenham's greeting made his views quite clear. "I eat very little breakfast, sir, and take it in my cabin. I have practically
no luncheon and take that in my cabin. However, I shall dine with you occasionally!"
"During the 1890s, naval design was in a state of flux and monstrosities of many kinds took the seas. Some vessels had so
little freeboard that their decks were continually awash. Others had such massive superstructures that they were in
danger of capsizing in a heavy sea. Their armament was equally preposterous. One battleship which Pakenham commanded
was equipped with four 16.5 inch muzzle-loaders each weighing 111 tons. When the Admiralty asked why he had not
carried out the gunnery practice laid down, he replied that he would be delighted to do so but for the damage it caused
the ship. When either of the forward guns was fired, he explained, the blast carried away part of the bridge and the recoil
of the after guns buckled the deck. In a polite postscript he pointed out that the guns were so long they drooped at the
muzzle. He asked if their lordships could supply a formula by which his gun-layers could apply the correct elevation to
counteract this unorthodox bend.

"In 1901 Pakenham had a dispute with Admiral Lord Charles Beresford, who failed to appreciate his caustic humour. As a
result he was sent to the China Station and unofficially told he was out of line for further promotion. Shortly after his
arrival in Chinese waters, war broke out between Russia and Japan, and he was ordered to join the Japanese Fleet as an
observer. Assigned to the cruiser Asahi, he was present at the Battle of Tsushima in August 1904 when the Russian fleet
was destroyed in the first large scale naval engagement of modern times. Pakenham won the admiration of his Japanese
hosts when he displayed imperturbability more Oriental than their own. While he was standing on the foredeck of the Asahi,
a Russian shell hit a gun turret, killing 20 men and showering him with blood. When he immediately went below, the
Japanese officers remarked that the British captain was not as brave as he pretended to be. But they spoke too soon. A
few minutes later, Pakenham reappeared in a fresh uniform of spotless white.

"This action so impressed the Japanese that he was invited on board the flagship Mikasa and thanked by Admiral Togo for
the example he had set. Togo mentioned him in his dispatches to the emperor, who awarded him the Order of the Rising
Sun, but the war was worth much more to Pakenham than a decoration. His reports to the Admiralty showed he was one
of the few men in the Royal Navy with a thorough appreciation of the tactics, strategy and technical implications of 20th
century naval warfare. His feud with Beresford forgotten, he was recalled to England. Before long he was placed in
command of the super-dreadnought Collingwood, one of the all-big-gun giants which put all previous types of battleships
into the discard.
"Admiral Pakenham was unpredictable. But it was this trait that endeared him to the lower deck. He once intervened when
the commander of the Collingwood was trying to find out why one of the steadiest men in the ship had overstayed his
leave. "Confidentially, now," said Pakenham with a winning smile, "tell your captain exactly what happened." Sheepishly
the reluctant seaman explained that the morning had been so bitterly cold he had hesitated to awaken the "nice little
woman" he had met ashore the previous evening. "Dismiss the charge, commander," said Pakenham briskly. "How splendid
it is to find that the age of chivalry is not yet dead."

"When Winston Churchill became First Lord of the Admiralty in 1911 he at once appointed Pakenham Fourth Sea Lord, a
post he held until the outbreak of World War 1, when he became Admiral Commanding the 3rd Cruiser Squadron. In
March 1915 he hoisted his flag in HMAS Australia. Thus he became senior officer of the Royal Australian Navy, which had
been lent to Britain and formed part of the Grand Fleet. Admiral Pakenham's first action on joining the Australia was to
reduce risk by throwing all the furniture out of the admiral's quarters. Also, because he always slept fully dressed during
the war and detested specks of white fluff showing on his uniform, he equipped his bunk with navy blue blankets. Rarely
did Pakenham lower his standards of dress, but there were moments of emergency when he was forced to appear on the
bridge wearing a white silk scarf in place of the customary stiff collar. On such occasions he apologised to all the officers
present.

"The unlucky collision off Horn Reef forced Pakenham to transfer to the New Zealand just before the Battle of Jutland. He
and his ship were fortunate to survive this historic battle, for his squadron bore the brunt of the first phase of the fighting.
Returning to the Australia after Jutland, Pakenham moved to the Lion the following year when he succeeded Beatty in
command of the battle cruisers. Right through the war, Pakenham never set foot ashore. When, after six years afloat, he
finally went ashore at the end of the war he threw a bombshell into a group of aristocratic and gushing ladies who
surrounded him at an official reception. He detested the type and was thoroughly bored by the time one of them remarked
that his wife would be glad to see him again after so long an absence. When Pakenham explained that he was a bachelor
she replied archly: "But, admiral, I thought you sailors had a wife in every port." "I am the exception, your ladyship," said
Pakenham without a smile. "I find it more convenient to keep a loose woman in Edinburgh."
"Admiral Sir William Pakenham retired from the Navy in 1926. He died at the age of 72 seven years later."

Sir Charles Algernon Parsons  [KCB 1911]
The following biography of Sir Charles Parsons appeared in the September 1962 issue of the monthly Australian magazine
"Parade":-
'On June 26, 1897, a 43-year-old engineer, Charles Algernon Parsons, single-handedly shattered the pomp of the famous
naval review at Spithead. It was the age of the battleships, and dozens of these floating fortresses, together with
innumerable cruisers and light craft, were anchored in the Solent waiting to be inspected by HRH the Prince of Wales, later
King Edward VII. As the royal yacht, the Victoria and Albert, steamed down the long line of ships, Parsons made an
impudent, unheralded entrance in a small steamer, the 44-ton Turbinia. Ripping along at an unprecedented 40 m.p.h., the
craft eluded the patrol launches and left the royal yacht pitching in its wake.

'Witnessed by thousands of spectators, including members of the Lords and Commons, foreign notabilities and distinguished
visitors from all over the world, this exhibition was condemned by many as being an affront to the prince. But Parsons had
taken the only way he knew of demonstrating that the engines which drove the Turbinia were in advance of the current
reciprocating steam engines. Parsons proved his point so effectively that the Admiralty ordered the construction of a
steam turbine destroyer, stipulating, however, that if she could not do 30 knots, the inventor was to forfeit £100,000. The
result was HMS Viper, which, clocking 37 knots on her trials, made every other vessel of her class obsolete. His sister-ship,
the Cobra, launched shortly afterwards, was even faster. By a tragic coincidence, both vessels were lost at sea, though
not because of their engines [HMS Viper foundered on rocks near Alderney on 3 August 1901, and the Cobra broke her
back in a storm in the North Sea on 18 September 1901]. At the enquiries it was found that the original Admiralty designs
for the ships were faulty.
'The turbine, as opposed to the cylinder-and-piston engine, was not new in 1897. The idea of using the velocity of high-
pressure steam to spin a wheel without the intervention of valves and cranks dated back many years. But neither James
Watt, Matthew Boulton, Richard Trevithick, nor any of the other pioneers of steam engineering had solved the many
problems involved. Charlie Parsons' early experiments with the turbine were associated with the generation of electricity.
The small, slow-moving dynamos of the time were driven from the fly-wheels of reciprocating engines, and seldom moved
faster than 1500 revolutions a minute. Parsons aimed at a dynamo which would register at least 18,000 revs., or 50 times
faster than the fastest engines then known. His turbine was the answer. This turbine drove high-pressure steam against
vanes set in the circumference of a wheel, causing it to rotate like a windmill. When directly coupled to an electric gener-
ator, it produced current silently, efficiently and economically.

'Nevertheless, the inventor found it hard to persuade the electric supply companies that their recently installed power
plants were already out of date. In 1893, the Scarborough Town Council decided to try out a Parsons turbo-generator, on
the understanding the inventor shouldered the financial risk. He need not have worried. The turbine was so successful that
the following year the London Metropolitan Electric Supply Company, threatened with the closure of its power-house
because of the noise and vibration of the plant, decided to follow Scarborough's example. After that, the reciprocating
steam engine was a thing of the past as far as the generation of electricity was concerned. It became merely a question
of bigger and better turbines.

'Charles Algernon Parsons, the man responsible for this great forward step, was the sixth son of the [3rd] Earl of Rosse.
Himself a remarkable man. the earl was interested in every branch of engineering, and made his home in King's Co.,
Ireland, a rendezvous for the foremost scientists of the day. The earl built the largest telescope then in existence and,
when Charles was born in 1854, was vainly trying to persuade the Admiralty that ironclad ships were the only answer to
the increasing efficiency of gunfire.

'Charles and his brothers were not sent to school. Their learned father and his gifted wife supervised their education with
the aid of specialist tutors. The earl had workshops and foundries on his estate, and the boys were expected to take off
their coats and learn practice as well as theory. Even the countess spent her spare time on the job casting ornamental
ironwork. Holidays were usually spent at sea, cruising in Lord Rosse's 150-ton auxiliary yacht. They were not altogether
pleasure jaunts, for the boys were all expected to learn navigation and marine engineering. At 15, Charles was terrorising
the less sophisticated inhabitants of King's County by driving round in a steam carriage he built himself. When he went to
Cambridge University four years later he was already a skilled engineer. There Parsons immediately turned his study into a
workshop and divided his time between his tools, the study of mathematics and rowing.

'After leaving Cambridge, Charles Parsons took the unusual step of apprenticing himself at the works of Sir William
Armstrong and Co., shipbuilders, gunmakers and engineers. By the time he was 30, however, he had established his own
factory, where he began work on his first turbines. About the same time he married. Mrs. Parsons had to be prepared for
anything. Once she was dismayed to see a gang of men setting up a giant poppet-head in the front garden. Her disting-
uished husband, clad in greasy overalls, blandly explained that he proposed to send down a bore to 12 miles to see what
lay below. This project failed. as also did a costly attempt to produce diamonds by electric fusion of carbon.

'More successful was his construction of what he called his "bellowphone", the first loud-speaker in history. Set up in his
grounds, the instrument lived up to its name, but Parsons reluctantly scrapped it when protests were raised by everyone
within five miles. Under the more impressive name of "autexophone", the instrument was given a tryout at an exhibition at
Earl's Court. The effect was so startling that the people in the first half-dozen rows clapped their hands over their ears
and bolted. When his daughter Rachael was born, Parsons built the only steam-driven perambulator in history. Adjusting
the steering so that it would keep on a circular course, he would set it going on the lawn to the glee of the child and the
horror of her nursemaid, who expected her charge to be blown to pieces at any moment. Although he first toys were model
engines and dynamos, the little girl survived and eventually became a graduate in mechanical science and a prominent
member of the Institute of Naval Architects.
'Any one of Parsons' major achievements could have made him famous. While his factory at Newcastle-on-Tyne built turbo-
generators for places as far apart as Shanghai and Buenos Aires, his optical works at St. Albans were turning out some of
the world's finest telescopes. Among his forgotten stunts was the construction of the first helicopter, a large, steam-
driven contraption, that he flew successfully in 1893. It was later turned into a monoplane, but the world was not ready
for flight, and Parsons turned to other forms of amusement. The only place where Parsons met defeat was in the kitchen.
When the cook requested the great engineer to adjust the domestic hot-water service the result was a terrific explosion
and a ruined dinner. After that, Parsons was never allowed in the kitchen.

'It is, however, to the development of the steam turbine that he owes his enduring fame. Shortly after the destroyers
Viper and Cobra were built, commercial shipping lines realised the great advantages of turbine engines. By 1901, the King
Edward and the Queen Alexandria, the first turbine-driven passenger vessels, were passing everything on the River Clyde.
Two years later the turbine-equipped steam yacht Emerald crossed the Atlantic, to be followed by the turbine-powered
liners. The first big naval vessel to be turbine driven was the epoch-making Dreadnought I, ancestor of the big-gun battle-
ships, which reached their culmination in monsters like the Vanguard. Until then, battleships had been unable to exceed 12
knots, but the Parsons turbine sent them pounding along at nearer 30, and produced the gigantic battle-cruisers of World
War I and afterwards. The first turbine-driven steamer brought to Australia was the Loongana, famous for many years on
the Melbourne-Launceston run.
'Parsons became a wealthy man, but he was never interested in money for its own sake, and many of his projects
functioned at a loss. Personally, he was a modest and even diffident man, slow and hesitant of speech and unimpressive
in company. Many people who met him found it hard to realise that he was one of the greatest engineers of his century.
Knighted in 1911, he was admitted to the Order of Merit in 1927, becoming the first engineer to achieve the distinction.
In 1931 he died at the age of 77 having lived long enough to see vast improvements and modifications made to his original
turbines, although the principles remained unaltered.'
Sir William Peel VC  [KCB 1858]
Sir William Peel, the 3rd son of British Prime Minister, Sir Robert Peel, was a Captain in the Royal Navy during the Crimean
War. His actions during that conflict led to him being awarded the Victoria Cross. His citation in the London Gazette of 24
February 1857 (issue 21971, pages 651 and 652) reads:-
"[Captain, later Admiral] Sir Stephen Lushington recommends this Officer:-
1st. For having on the 18th October, 1854, at the greatest possible risk, taken up a live shell, the fuze still burning, from
among several powder cases, outside the magazine, and thrown it over the parapet (the shell bursting as it left his hands),
thereby saving the magazines, and the lives of those immediately round it. (Despatch from Sir S. Lushington inclosed in
letter from Admiral Lord Lyons, 10th May 1856).
2nd. On the 5th November, 1854, at the Battle of Inkerman, for joi8ning the Officers of the Grenadier Guards, and
assisting in defending the colours of that Regiment, when hard pressed at the Sandbag Battery. (Sir S. Lushington is
authorized to make this statement by the Lieutenant-General Commanding the Division, His Royal Highness the Duke of
Cambridge, who is ready to bear testimony to the fact).
3rd. On the 18th June, 1855, for volunteering to lead the Ladder Party at the assault on the Redan, and carrying the
first ladder until wounded."
On each of the three occasions outlined above, Peel was accompanied by his aide-de-camp, Midshipman Edward St. John
Daniel, who was only 17 at the time of the first incident. He, too, was awarded the Victoria Cross, but, in 1861, he became
the first person to be stripped of his VC after being convicted of desertion.
After the Crimean War, Peel went on to serve in the Indian Mutiny, where he died of smallpox in Cawnpore, aged only 33.
Sir Harry North Dalrymple Prendergast VC  [KCB 1885 and GCB 1902]
Prendergast as a lieutenant in the Madras Engineers during the Indian Mutiny when he won his Victoria Cross. His citation
in the London Gazette (issue 22318, page 3793) reads:-
"For conspicuous bravery on the 21st of November, 1857, at Mundisore, in saving the life of Lieutenant G. Dew, 14th Light
Dragoons, at the risk of his own, by attempting to cut down a valaitee, who covered him (Lieutenant Dew) with his piece,
from only a few paces to the rear. Lieutenant Prendergast was wounded in this affair by the discharge of the piece, and
would probably have been cut down, had not the rebel been killed by Major Orr. He also distinguished himself by his
gallantry in the actions at Ratgurh and Betwa, when he was severely wounded. Major-General Sir Hugh Rose, in forwarding
his recommendation of this Officer, states:
"Lieutenant Prendergast, Madras Engineers, was specially mentioned by Brigadier, now Sir Charles Stuart, for the gallant
act at Mundisore, when he was severely wounded; secondly, he was specially mentioned to me when acting voluntarily as
my Aide-de-Camp in the Action before besieging Ragurh, on the Beena River, for gallant conduct. His horse was killed on
that occasion. Thirdly, at the Action of 'the Betwa,' he again voluntarily acted as my Aide-de-Camp, and distinguished him-
self by his bravery in the charge, which I made with Captain Need's Troop, Her Majesty's 14th Light Dragoons, against the
left of the so-called Peishwa's Army, under Tantia Topee. He was severely wounded on that occasion."
Sir William Price  [Kt Bach 1915]
Sir William was killed by a landslide, as reported by the "New York Times" of 3 October 1924:-
"Quebec, Oct. 2 - Sir William Price, head of the firm of Price Brothers & Co. Ltd., and principal partner of J[ames]
B[uchanan] Duke [the American tobacco tycoon], was killed this morning at Kenogami, 120 miles from here [Quebec],
when he was buried under a landslide. The body has not yet been recovered. Only meagre details are available.
"Sir William left Quebec yesterday to inspect what is known as the 'Easter Wood Pile,' located below the falls at Kenogami,
where a small landslide occurred on Tuesday, probably caused by the torrential rains of the past few days.
"This morning the party, consisting of Sir William and two engineers, Messrs. A.A. MacDiarmid and M. Munro, started from
the mills for the site of Tuesday's landslide to ascertain how much damage had been caused and to see what measures
should be taken to prevent further mishaps.
"Whether they were standing at the top or the bottom of the Wood Pile is not known, but it is reported that suddenly
the whole side of the hill came down with a rumble, burying Sir William. His two companions escaped and spread the news,
and a searching party was formed. Men armed with picks and shovels dug frantically at the pile of earth and boulders,
hoping to rescue Sir William alive.
"Sir William's son, A.C. Price, immediately set out for Kenogami, where he is assisting in the search for the body, but up to
a late hour tonight it had not been recovered.
"Another of Sir William's sons, Jack Price, landed in England only on Wednesday on his honeymoon, having been married in
Montreal last week, and two other sons sailed for England last Saturday on the Doric to enter Cambridge University.
"Sir William Price, one of Canada's leading pulp magnates, was 57 years old on August 30. He was born at Talca, Chile,
in 1867. He joined the firm of Price Brothers & Co. Ltd. in 1886. He served overseas in the war as Lieutenant-Colonel of
the 171st Battalion, which he recruited himself in 1916
"In addition to being president of the firm of Price Brothers, Sir William was interested in a number of other businesses,
being honorary president of the Union Bank of Canada, president of the A. Gravel Lumber Company, president of the Metis
Lumber Company, Ltd., and a director of the Wayagamack Pulp and Paper Company, Ltd, and the Canadian Export Paper
Company.
"In 1922 Sir William joined his interests with the J.B. Duke interests, and the Quebec Development Company was formed to
develop one of the world's largest water power plants, situated at the Grande Discharge of the Saguenay, not far from
the Price mills at Kenogami.
"He served as a member of [the Canadian] Parliament from 1908 to 1912 and was created a Knight Bachelor in 1915."
Sir Henry William Primrose  [KCB 1899]
Sir Henry committed suicide in June 1923, as reported in the "Derby Daily Telegraph" of 18 June 1923:-
"With a bullet wound in his head, Sir Henry Primrose, a cousin of Lord Rosebery, and a former chairman of the Board of
Customs and of the Board of Inland Revenue, was found unconscious yesterday morning near the Albert Memorial in
Kensington Gardens. A revolver was close by. Sir Henry died soon afterwards in St. George's Hospital.
"Sir Henry, who was 77 years old, had been, it is understood, for some time in ill-health, and a nurse had been in
attendance upon him at 44, Ennismore-gardens, Kensington. Early on Sunday morning the nurse on going to the bedroom
found it empty. A search failed to reveal Sir Henry's presence in the house, and the police were informed. The neighbour-
hood was speedily scoured, and London police-stations were informed of his disappearance and provided with a description.
The tragic discovery was made by a lad who was walking through Kensington Gardens, and who at once informed
Kensington Police Station.
"Mr. Reginald Primrose, the late Sir Henry's son, said today that his father had been in ill-health. A letter, he added,
addressed to himself, and opening with "My darling son," was found on the body. It stated that he had abandoned hope of
recovery from his illness, and that it was his intention to shoot himself could he but retain his courage to the end. Mr.
Primrose said that another letter written on a half-sheet of paper was also found in Sir Henry's possession. It is understood
that this was addressed to the Coroner, and asked that to avoid distress the body should not be taken to his home."
Sir Dighton Macnaghten Probyn VC  [KCSI 1876, KCB (Civ) 1887, GCVO 1896, GCB (Civ) 1902, KCB (Mil) 1909,
GCB (Mil) 1910 and GCSI 1911]
One of the most decorated men of his time, Probyn enlisted in the East India Company's Bengal Army as a cornet [second
lieutenant] in 1849. In 1852 he was appointed adjutant of the 2nd Punjab Cavalry, with which unit he fought during the
Indian Mutiny. It was during this conflict that he was awarded the Victoria Cross, not, apparently for a sinngle action, but
rather for a number of instances of bravery. His citation in the London Gazette of 18 June 1858 [issue 22154, page 2960]
(which shows no specific date for the act of bravery leading to the award) reads as follows:-
"Has been distinguished for gallantry and daring throughout this campaign. At the battle of Agra, when his squadron
charged the rebel infantry, he was some time separated from his men, and surrounded by five or six sepoys. He defended
himself from the various cuts made at him, and before his own men had joined him had cut down two of his assailants. At
another time, in single combat with a sepoy, he was wounded in the wrist, by the bayonet, and his horse also was slightly
wounded; but, though the sepoy fought desperately, he cut him down. The same day he singled out a standard bearer,
and, in the presence of a number of the enemy, killed him and captured the standard. These are only a few of the gallant
deeds of this brave young officer. [Despatch from Major-General James Hope Grant, K.C.B., dated 10th January, 1858]"
Probyn continued in the Bengal Army until 1872, when he was appointed equerry to the Prince of Wales (later King Edward
VII). His subsequent career was that of a royal courtier, being Keeper of the Privy Purse, Secretary to the Prince of Wales
and Comptroller of the Household.
Sir James Robert Rae  [KBE 1920]
From the Yeovil "Western Daily News" of 31 December 1928:-
'Captain Sir James Robert Rae, a well-known master mariner in the service of the City Line, was killed on Saturday by a
motor-'bus, while walking with Lady Rae in Saltcoats, Ayrshire, where he resided.
'While crossing Ardrossan Road to reach his home, he was knocked down by the 'bus and so severely injured that he died
in a few minutes.
'Sir James, who was born in Glasgow in 1859, rendered notable service in the transportation of troops from India during the
war. He was awarded the O.B.E. in 1918, and was created a K.B.E. in 1920. He had recently been in command of the steamer
City of Exeter.
'Sir James Rae, who was Commodore of the City Line, had been at home for a few weeks whilst his latest command, the City
of Nagpur, was being refitted for a world cruise.
'Although he was responsible for carrying thousands of troops from India and elsewhere to the various fronts during the four
years of the war, he never lost a man. When his ship, the City of Exeter, was mined in the Indian Ocean, he succeeded in
bringng her safely to port.'
Sir Harry Holdsworth Rawson  [KCB 1897, GCB 1906 and GCMG 1909]
The following [edited] biography appeared in the January 1950 issue of the Australian monthly magazine "Parade":-
"When Admiral Sir Harry Rawson stepped ashore in Sydney with his wife and daughter on April 9, 1902, to take up duty as
Governor of New South Wales, he broke something of a precedent. He was the first N.S.W. Governor for 92 years to come
from the Navy. The first four governors, Phillip, Hunter, King and Bligh, were sailors, but the disturbance known as the "Rum
Rebellion" which enlivened Bligh's term seemed to have convinced the authorities in England that naval men were not
popular "down under." it was left to Sir Harry to triumphantly refute this notion.
"The seadog who stepped briskly ashore in 1902 was a man of 59, with a cheerful temper, grizzled beard, broad face and
heavy eyebrows pointing upward and giving his expression a rather Mephistophelian cast, belied by his frank and simple
manner. He had seen a good deal of naval service. Born in Cheshire of a Yorkshire family in 1843, he went to Marlborough
College. The, at 12 years of age, to Eastman's Naval Academy in Chelsea. He must have improved his time there, since
only two years later he joined as a cadet and was appointed to H.M.S. Victory at Portsmouth. Having passed his examin-
ation he was given his commission as a midshipman, and joined the mess of the "Princess Charlotte," commanded by
Captain George King [later Admiral, 1809-1891].
"The next few years were spent on the China Station, at Hong Kong. Before he left on that cruise, however, he nearly
ended his career by falling 30 feet down a hatch. He suffered a good many bruises, but no bones were broken. While on
the China Station he made his debut as a target for enemy fire, at 17 years of age. This action was the assault on the
Taku Forts by allied British and French forces under Sir Hope Grant. It was a short war, the Chinese Government soon
surrendering. This was not a victory of which the English people have since felt very proud, or inclined to bring up in
conversation. One of the terms of peace was the legislation by the Chinese Government of the import of opium from India.
There had already been a war with China on this subject [1839-1842].
"Another incident of his midshipman days left sufficient impression on Sir Harry for him to speak of it many years later.
While no martinet, Captain King found it necessary to insist in the usual manner that a drunken liberty man [a sailor with
leave to go ashore] should refrain from punching one of his officers on the nose. This aroused indignation for'ard, and a
large and noisy deputation came aft demanding with appropriate sailor language that the man should be released. Capt.
King gave prompt orders that the ringleaders should be put in irons. There was no more trouble, said Sir Harry, except for
the noble fellows that had sacrificed themselves for liberty.
"Three years after the Taku action he went as a lieutenant to the "Encounter," and then. For gunnery instruction, to the
"Excellent." So well did he profit by his teaching that he himself was promoted to first lieutenant or gunnery instructor to
"Bellerophon" in 1867. Then followed a cruise in the Mediterranean, and in 1870 he was appointed to the Royal Yacht
"Victoria and Albert." It is recorded that he here distinguished himself by a life-saving exploit. He dived into the water and
rescued two women of a party whose boat had capsized at the gangway of the yacht. In 1871, now in command of the
Royal Yacht, he married Miss Florence Austin, daughter of a Cheshire county family. Shortly afterwards he went to the
battleship "Hercules," as Commander, under Captain W. M. Dorville.

"The Navy was in a transition stage at that period. The 'oaken sides' had given place to iron, but the vessels still sailed,
though many now had auxiliary steam engines. While Commander Rawson served in the "Bellerophon," the first battleship
without sails, the "Devastation" came home from her first cruise. So anxious had the Admiralty been concerning this
experiment that they had sent Sir Harry's old ship, the "Hercules," to keep her company, and stand by in case of trouble.

"It was in 1897 that Sir Harry, now with flag rank, was the commander-in-chief of one of England's little wars. Overami,
King of the Beni, objected to having his religious customs disturbed by business and massacred the mission which the
and massacred the mission which the British Consul persisted in leading to Benin City from the coast. A request from the
Government to Sir Harry, whose flagship was at Simonstown (South Africa), whether an expedition against Overami could
be carried out in six weeks at a cost of £50,000, received the reply that it could be done in four weeks at less cost.

"It was. The Admiral gathered a squadron and 1200 men. "It was," says an authority, "a remarkable example of good
organisation hastily improvised." Sir Harry had the news of the massacre on January 4. Admiralty orders were received ten
days later. Nineteen days after that the men were landed, covered by the warships on the river. Five days later the city
was taken. King Overami and his chiefs were prisoners.
"There was stiff jungle fighting. The King had made a special "ju-ju," consisting largely, as the Beni religious ceremonies
usually did, of the crucifixion and torture of slaves. While these heathen rites were being celebrated, Sir Harry had signal
rockets fired from one of the naval vessels. These burst into crimson and green stars over the ju-ju compound, causing
deep dismay to all present except the crucified slaves, who were beyond taking much interest in the white man's magic.
These portents took much of the heart out of the defence. Sir Harry had redeemed his promise; the war was over in 24
days and cost £30,000. The town, which was "found to be reeking of human sacrifices," was partly burned, the crucifixion
trees were cut down. Overami was deported, and his chiefs were executed.
"Queen Victoria died in 1901, and Sir Harry Rawson was senior naval officer on the occasion of the great naval review at
Spithead in tribute to her memory. It was in the following year that he was commissioned by Edward VII to represent him
as Governor in New South Wales. [Then follows a lengthy series of anecdotes, each designed to demonstrate his popularity
as Governor].

"Sir Harry, like most simple and brave souls who see their duty straight before them, had been rewarded by a happy life.
But sorrow was inevitable. In 1905 his wife became ill with a heart condition. Hoping that a trip abroad would benefit her,
she, her daughter and younger son Wyatt, left Sydney for England. A bad report of her health sent him hurrying to London
on five months' leave. She rallied, and they arranged to return to Australia on the "Orontes," but she died in the Red Sea
[3 December 1905]. It was a great blow to Sir Harry [but] his daughter Alice remained with him to cheer and help him
through the rest of his term as Governor, a term that was extended till 1909. Next year, after an operation [for append-
icitis] he died. [His nephew Sir Dudley de Chair was also Governor of New South Wales 1924-1930]."

Very strangely, to my mind, the "Parade" biography makes no mention whatsoever of Sir Harry's role in what is generally
agreed to be the shortest war in history, a conflict which lasted for a mere 38 minutes, although some sources stretch
this out to 45 minutes. This was the Anglo-Zanzibar War of 1896.

In the last decades of the 19th century various European powers engaged in what became known as the "Scramble for
Africa." As part of the scramble, in 1890 Britain and Germany concluded the Heligoland-Zanzibar Treaty under which, inter
alia, Germany pledged not to interfere with British actions in the Sultanate of Zanzibar. In the same year, Zanzibar became
a protectorate (as opposed to a colony) of Great Britain, such status ensuring that Zanzibar continued to be ruled by a
Sultan, while the British appointed a resident Consul to look after their interests.
On 25th August 1896, the ruling Sultan, Sheikh Hamid bin Thuwaini Al-Busaid died suddenly, almost certainly poisoned by
his cousin, Sheikh Khalid bin Barghash, who proclaimed himself Sultan. However, the British wanted the new Sultan to be
Hamoud bin Mohammed, believing that he would be much easier to work with. In any event, a treaty had been signed
that gave the British the power to approve or veto any candidates for the Sultanate, and Khalid's decision to ignore this
protocol led to the British resident Consul, [Sir] Basil Shillito Cave [1865-1931], issuing an ultimatum to Khalid to abdicate
immediately. When Khalid continued to ignore this ultimatum and began to fortify the Sultan's palace, Cave requested and
received from his superiors permission to use force to remove him.
A small fleet of Royal Navy ships under the command of Rear Admiral Harry Lawson arrived shortly thereafter, and on the
morning of 27th August, final negotiations having broken down, the bombardment of the Sultan's Palace began at 9.02 a.m.
and ended at 9.40 a.m., by which time the palace had been set on fire, the royal yacht Glasgow had been sunk and the
forces loyal to the Sultan had sustained approximately 500 casualties, while one British sailor had been injured. Sheikh
Khalid fled to the German consulate from whence he was smuggled to German East Africa where he received political
asylum. During World War I, he was captured by British forces and exiled to the Seychelles and St. Helena before being
allowed to return to Mombasa, where he died in 1927. Rawson received his KCB as a result of this action.
