Sir Richard Adam Sykes  [KCMG 1976]
Sir Richard was assassinated by the Provisional IRA in The Hague, as reported in 'The Irish Times' of 23 March 1979:-
'The Provisional IRA were the most likely assassins of the British Ambassador to Holland and an embassy employee who
were shot dead in The Hague yesterday, Dutch police said last night. But no group was so far claimed responsibility for
the killing of the ambassador, Sir Richard Sykes, and a 19-year-old footman, Karel Straub.
'Sir Richard, who flew to Dublin within hours of the murder of the British Ambassador, Mr Christopher Ewart-Biggs in 1976,
was an expert on security for British diplomats serving abroad, according to the Press Association. During the three days
he spent in Dublin in July, 1976, he not only reported directly to the British Government on developments here but carried
out an investigation of security arrangements and procedures. Later, Sir Richard prepared a special report on security
precautions for diplomats working abroad, particularly in Ireland.
'Last night, a senior Dutch police officer investigating yesterday's killings in The Hague told The Irish Times: "So far we
have nothing whatever to go on. But it seems obvious that it was a political killing and that means the Red Brigade, the
Moluccans or the IRA. To me, the IRA seem the most likely people." And British Foreign Office officials, recalling last year's
IRA attacks on British Army bases in Germany, also felt that the Provisionals were the most likely killers.
'The ambassador and the footman died in hospital after being shot as they were leaving the ambassador's residence in The
Hague city centre. Two men were seen fleeing on foot. A Hague police-spokesman said that only four shots were fired at
the ambassador from a distance of about 10 metres as he got into his Rolls-Royce. One bullet struck him in the head. The
footman was hit as he held open the car door. The driver of the car was not hit, however, and he accelerated away
through the narrow streets with the badly-wounded ambassador. The footman was collected by ambulance within minutes,
but both men were pronounced dead at Westeinde Hospital within two hours.
'Two men, apparently aged between 35 and 40, were involved in the attack but eye witnesses reported seeing only one
weapon - a long-barrelled pistol. Immediately after the shooting, squads of armed police searched the city centre and set
up road blocks around the outskirts, but no-one was detained.
'An embassy spokesman said that Sir Richard did not have a personal bodyguard and was normally accompanied on car
journeys only by his chauffeur. A police spokesman said no policemen were on duty outside the residence yesterday
morning. City officials had received no request from the embassy for a guard, he added.
'Miss Alyson Bailes, who is in her late 20s, an assistant to the former British Trade Secretary, Mr Edmund Dell, told
reporters that she was in the back seat of the ambassador's car when the firing started. "I instinctively raised my handbag
in front of my head to protect myself from the flying glass, and so saw noth8ing at all of what was happening. It was
only when the chauffeur drove out into the street that I realised the ambassador had been shot and was unconscious."
'Sir Richard had a distinguished military and diplomatic career. During the second World War, he served with the Royal
Signals and was awarded both the Military Cross and the French Croix de Guerre. He was appointed British Ambassador to
Holland in 1977, after spending two years as Deputy Under-Secretary at the Foreign Office in London. Prior to that he had
been second-in-charge at the British Embassy in Washington. Earlier in his career, he served in Peking, Havana, Athens,
Brussels and Santiago.'
Sir Edward Spence Symes  [KCIE 1900]
Sir Edward entered the Indian Civil Service in 1873, following which he held various appointments in Burma. Between 1888
and 1890 he was Commissioner of the Central, Eastern and Southern Divisions of Upper Burma, and from 1890 to the time
of his death, he was Chief Secretary to the Government of Burma, and a member of the Legislative Council. Sir Edward
committed suicide in January 1901. The following report of his death appeared in "The Times of India" on 11 January 1901:-
"The following further particulars have been made known regarding the tragedy which took place yesterday at Rangoon
in which Sir Edward Symes, Chief Secretary to the Government of Burmah, attempted to take his life by shooting himself.
He arrived from home [i.e. England] a few days ago in wretched health, but in hopes of being able to complete the few
months necessary for pension. He has for years been suffering from complete nervous breakdown, the result of years of
exhausting work, especially during the troubled years following the annexation of Upper Burmah. The past few days
showed it would be impossible for him to remain in this exhausting climate. Since his arrival he has been staying with
Mr. Justice Fox, one of his oldest friends. About 2 p.m. yesterday he left the house in a ticca gharry [a horse-drawn
carriage] and drove to Messrs. A. Scott and Company's, where he purchased a large army revolver. The gharry then
drove up to the Sule Pagoda Road, and when opposite the Scotch Kirk, Sir Edward put the revolver to his mouth and
fired, the bullet passing through the roof of his mouth and out near the top of his forehead. When picked up he was
perfectly conscious, and he gave his name to the European soldier and a native constable, who at once drove him to the
hospital, where he was immediately attended to. Up to a late hour last night, though he was quite conscious and free
from pain, little hope was entertained for his recovery. The sad tragedy has cast a gloom over Rangoon society, for Sir
Edward Symes had hosts of friends, few of whom have seen him since his lamentable breakdown in health, but who will
never forget his geniality, his unfailing tact and courtesy. It is not too much to say that this province has had no abler
or more gifted servant than Sir Edward Symes in its service. He gave his very best, and in doing so, laid the seeds of the
insidious disease which has made him of late an invalid and the merest shadow of his former bright and cheery self.
"LATER. Sir Edward Symes became unconscious at 4 o'clock this morning and died at 8.30. His funeral takes place from the
General Hospital at 7.30 tomorrow morning."
Sir Patrick Gordon Taylor   [Kt Bach 1955]
Sir Patrick Taylor, who always preferred to be known as "Bill," was an Australian aviation pioneer, best known for his
heroic actions on a crippled flight across the Tasman Sea in July 1935.
Taylor's obituary, published in 'The Times' of 17 December 1966, reads as follows:-
'Captain Sir Patrick Gordon Taylor, G.C., M.C., O.B.E., pioneer aviator, died in Honolulu on Wednesday. He was 70. One of
his most famous feats was on a celebration flight across the Tasman sea with his close friend, Sir Charles Kingsford-
Smith, in 1935 when their ancient Southern Cross aircraft ran into trouble. The plane had to turn back to Australia with
only two of its three engines working. Taylor, acting as navigator, noticed a stream of smoke issuing from the overloaded
port engine. This denoted excessive oil consumption - and the seemingly inevitable loss of another engine. Taylor climbed
out along the strut to the useless starboard engine. From it he took oil and transferred it to the smoking port engine.
Repeating this every half hour, he enabled the plane to limp back to Australia. He was awarded the O.B.E. in 1937 for
averting disaster on the attempted Australia-New Zealand air mail flight in 1935. [The initials O.B.E. are incorrect - the
award was the Medal of the Order of the British Empire for Gallantry - see below for further details].
'From 1942 to 1944 he delivered aircraft across the Atlantic. In 1944 he flew a Catalina from the west coast of Mexico
to the little atoll of Clipperton Island and on to Tahiti - surviving a hurricane at the atoll. As recently as 1951 he pioneered
another air route - this time across the Southern Pacific by way of the remote, harbourless Easter Island to South America,
making the return flight to prove the route thoroughly.
Taylor served in the First World War with the Royal Flying Corps. He made an air crossing of the Indian Ocean, and survey
of air route for the British and Australian governments in 1939. Later, in 1944, he made a crossing of the Central Pacific
and a survey of the air route for the Royal Air Force. He wrote several books - among them Call to the Winds [Angus &
Robertson, Sydney 1939], Frigate Bird [Angus & Robertson, Sydney 1953], and The Sky Beyond [Cassell, London 1963].
He was awarded the G.C. in 1942.' [this statement is somewhat misleading - on 9 July 1937 (London Gazette issue 34416,
page 4414) Taylor was awarded the Medal of the Order of the British Empire for Gallantry, or Empire Gallantry Medal. The
Empire Gallantry Medal was revoked by Royal Warrant on 24 September 1940. All living recipients and the next-of-kin of
recipients who had been posthumously awarded the medal after 3 September 1939 (the start of World War II) were obliged
to exchange the Empire Gallantry Medal for the George Cross].
More complete details of Taylor's heroic act were published in the Lismore, New South Wales, "Northern Star" on 12 October
2015, from which the following is extracted:-
'One of Bill and Smithy's more famous exploits took place over the Tasman during a commemorative 'jubilee' flight in May
1935. Nearly 1000 kilometres after taking off they experienced trouble in one of the plane's three engines. The exhaust
manifold cracked free and smashed the propeller which created such a terrible shaking sensation that Smithy shut the
engine down to save the plane.

'It was difficult flying the unbalanced plane, and with reduced power it began to lose altitude. Smithy ordered Bill and radio
operator John Stannage to throw most of their precious jubilee mail cargo out the window in a bid to lighten the load but,
fortunately, they accidentally overlooked a shifting spanner, which later proved very useful.
'When the engine on the other side of the plane began to burn oil things became serious. The trail of grey-blue smoke
indicated the extent of that drama even before its oil pressure gauge indicated alarm. With little thought for his own life
Bill decided to get oil from the dead engine and transfer it to the one requiring help. Pushing panic back he climbed out of
the cockpit window and crawled along a horizontal strut connecting the engine to the fuselage, bracing his neck and
shoulders against the wing. With winds exceeding 130 km/h it is a wonder h was not blown away but he managed to
unscrew the oil drain plug, using that critical spanner, and filled a thermos with the precious liquid before getting it back
to the cockpit where Stannage poured it into a leather suitcase. This act was repeated several times before they had
enough to attempt a re-fill of the stricken engine, and then the whole process was repeated in reverse another five times.
'It was a heroic act that saved them and for that Bill was awarded the Empire Gallantry Medal, later converted to the
George Cross, the highest civilian bravery award.'

H.S.H. Francis Joseph Leopold Frederick, Prince of Teck  [KCVO 1898 and GCVO 1909]
Francis was the second son of Francis, Duke of Teck and thus brother of Queen Mary, wife of King George V, and the 1st
Marquess of Cambridge and the 1st Earl of Athlone. He pursued a career in the Army, serving in the Nile Expedition during
1897-1898 and the Boer War in 1899-1900. He reached the rank of Major before retiring in 1901. On his early death from
pneumonia in 1910, the "Weekly Irish Times" of 29 October 1910 published the following obituary:-
"We regret to announce the death of His Serene Highness Prince Francis of Teck, brother of the Queen which took place
soon after 11 o'clock on Saturday at the Nursing Home in Welbeck street, where the Prince had been staying during his
illness.
"The King and Queen and other members of the Royal Family were with Prince Francis at the last. Soon after their arrival
at the Nursing Home the Sub-Dean of the Chapel Royal was sent for, and he administered the last consolation of religion
shortly before the Prince died.
"The Prince, who recently went to Balmoral to recuperate from the effects of the operation in his throat a month ago,
caught a severe cold while in Scotland. He was unable to travel when the Court removed to London, and remained with
Sir James Reid, one of the King's physicians, in attendance. On his arrival in London later a preliminary operation showed
that a more serious operation was required immediately. From the effect of these operations he rallied, and showed signs
of ultimate recovery. However, during the last week the distinguished patient had a relapse, and though he seemed a little
better on Friday, his condition during the night assumed the gravest character. So serious were the symptoms that the
King and Queen visited the Nursing Home as early as half-past four on Saturday and remained for four hours. Their
Majesties returned to Marlborough House for breakfast, and left again for Welbeck street at 10.30, and were present at
the last. The end was quite peaceful. There were present, besides the King and Queen, the Duchess of Teck and Prince
and Princess Alexander of Teck. The Duke of Teck, however, is ill, and was unable to leave his bed.
"Prince Francis Joseph Leopold Frederick of Teck, K.C.V.O., D.S.O., was born on the 9th January, 1870, at Kensington
Palace. He was the son of the late Duke of Teck and the late Princess Mary Adelaide, a daughter of the first Duke of
Cambridge and an aunt of King George. Prince Francis had two brothers and one sister. His brothers were Prince Adolphus,
the present Duke of Teck [Marquess of Cambridge from 1917], who married a daughter of the Duke of Westminster, and is
a major in the 1st Life Guards, and Prince Alexander [Earl of Athlone from 1917], a captain in the Royal Horse Guards, who
married Princess Alice of Albany. Prince Francis's only sister was Princess Mary of Teck, now Her Majesty the Queen. He
was, therefore, both a cousin and a brother-in-law of King George.
"The Prince's parents designed him for the Army, and he was educated at Wellington College and at Sandhurst. In 1889,
when in his twentieth year, he received a commission in the 1st Dragoons. He was aide-de-camp to the General Officer
Commanding at Quetta in 1896-7, and served as a captain in the Egyptian Army in 1897-8, receiving the medal with clasps.
Afterwards he was attached to the 9th Lancers, and later to the King's Royal Rifles, and was appointed aide-de-camp to
the General Officer Commanding the South-Eastern District. From 1899 to 1900 he was a Staff Captain in the Remount
Establishment in Dublin. He proved a valuable officer in the Remount Department in South Africa during the war. He was
mentioned in despatches, and received the rank of Brevet Major, the Queen's Medal with three clasps, and the D.S.O. The
Prince was an enthusiastic follower of hounds, a fine shot, a lover of racing and a good judge of a horse. He was an
amiable man, a gracious Prince, and made many friends by his charm and simplicity of manner."
Notwithstanding his military career, Prince Francis was better known as an inveterate gambler and womaniser. According to
an article in the London "Telegraph" of 28 March 2007, the supposed exemption from publication of royal wills is thought to
date from the death of Prince Francis. His will is said to have outraged his royal relations by leaving the family's jewels,
known as the Cambridge emeralds, to his mistress, Ellen, Countess of Kilmorey. These jewels were quietly repurchased
for Queen Mary to wear at her husband's coronation as King George V in 1911. At the same time, Queen Mary applied to
the court for her brother's will to be sealed so as to avoid any scandal arising from Francis's embarrassingly generous gifts
to his mistress in his will. This precedent has been followed by subsequent members of the Royal family, but not, I hasten
to add, for any similar reasons.
Sir Christopher Charles Teesdale VC  [KCMG 1887]
Teesdale was born in South Africa and later became the first South African-born recipient of the Victoria Cross. He joined
the Royal Artillery in 1848 and, by then a lieutenant, he was present at the Battle of Kars in Turkey during the Crimean
War, where his actions led to his award of the Victoria Cross. The citation in the London Gazette (issue 22043, page 3194)
reads:-
"For gallant conduct, in having, while acting as Aide-de-Camp to Major General Sir William Fenwick Williams, Bart., K.C.B.,
at Kars [29 September 1855], volunteered to take command of the force engaged in the defence of the most advanced
part of the works - the key of the position - against the attack of the Russian Army; when, by throwing himself into the
midst of the enemy, who had penetrated into the above redoubt, he encouraged the garrison to make an attack, so
vigorous, as to drive out the Russians therefrom and prevent its capture; also for having, during the hottest part of the
action, when the enemy's fire had driven the Turkish Artillerymen from their guns, rallied the latter, and by his intrepid
example induced them to return to their post; and further, after having led the final charge which completed the victory
of the day, for having, at the greatest personal risk, saved from the fury of the Turks, a considerable number of disabled
among the enemy, who were lying wounded outside the works - an action witnessed, and acknowledged gratefully before
the Russian Staff, by General Mouravieff."
Teesdale was wounded during the battle and taken prisoner until he was released in 1856. In 1858 he was appointed
Master of Ceremonies to the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) and retained this post until his death, having in the
meantime been promoted to Major General and knighted in 1887.
Sir Eric Teichman  [KCMG 1933, GCMG 1944]
Sir Eric was a British diplomat and orientalist who made a number of journeys through central Asia. He had just returned
to his English home when he was killed in December 1944. His death was reported in "The Scotsman" of 5 December 1944:-
"Sir Eric Teichman, former Counsellor at the British Embassy at Chungking [now Chongqing] and a famous traveller, was
found dead early yesterday on his Norfolk estate at Honingham. He was 60.
"He heard a shot fired on the estate on Sunday afternoon, and, having been troubled recently by poachers, went outside
to investigate. He took no weapons. He did not return, and search parties went over the estate, but meeting with no
success they were called off.
"Lady Teichman, however, made a later search, and shortly after midnight the body was found about 500 yards from the
Hall in a bracken wood. A bullet wound in the cheek had penetrated to the shoulder, from where it was removed. It is
believed that death was instantaneous.
"Sir Eric was one of the Foreign Office's greatest experts on China, where he had advised successive British Ministers and
Ambassadors. He retired in 1936, but was recalled in 1942 to become Chinese adviser to the Embassy at Chungking. He
made many long journeys in Asia, once travelling 3600 miles by motor lorry, pack ponies, and aeroplane from Peking to
Delhi. These journeys, on some of which he was the only white man, were the more remarkable as he was almost a cripple,
his back badly bent by acute rheumatism. In 1932 he broke his spine, but continued to travel, and even played polo. He
was said to know more Chinese dialects than any other Englishman."
Within a few days after Sir Eric's death, an American soldier, Private George E. Smith, had been detained and charged with
his murder. Smith was tried before a court-martial in Attlebridge, Norfolk in January 1945. The outcome of this court-
martial was reported in "The Times" of 13 January 1945:-
"An American soldier, Private George E. Smith, jun., 27, of Pittsburgh, was found Guilty yesterday by a United States
Court-martial at Attlebridge, near Norwich, of the murder of Sir Eric Teichman, the former diplomat. He was sentenced to
be hanged. The trial lasted five days.
"Sir Eric Teichman was found shot in the grounds of his estate at Honingham Hall. Smith was alleged to have confessed to
shooting him while "hunting" on the estate on December 3. He was described by the defence as a homicidal degenerate,
and the defending office pleaded insanity on his behalf. When the hearing was resumed yesterday Smith chose not to give
evidence.
"Major Brockus, who prosecuted said the Court would be warranted in casting aside the defence of insanity. "When Sir
Eric Teichman came close to Smith and asked his name," Major Brockus said, "Smith, knowing full well that he was not
going to have his name taken and be turned over to a court-martial for discharging firearms, or hunting without a licence,
said to himself "I will kill him. No one will ever know what happened to this old man. I can get rid of him." Smith under-
estimated one man, Wojtacha, the soldier who was with him. Smith thought that Wojtacha would never tell. Wojtacha is
very fortunate that he was not killed by Smith on that occasion."
"Lieutenant Sokarl, in his speech for the defence, said that the killing of Sir Eric Teichman was a purposeless, motiveless,
and idiotic act. Their inability to determine why Smith did such a thing stamped it as a peculiar and abnormal act.
"The Court returned after 90 minutes deliberation in private. Colonel Olin F. McIlnay, the President, asked if the prosecution
had any evidence of previous convictions to offer. Major Brockus stated that Smith was sentenced to four months' hard
labour last April for being disorderly in uniform in a public place. Commenting on the speech for the defence, Major
Brockus declared, "Smith has forfeited his right to stay on this earth. By his cold-blooded act he has become a cancer on
the world body. It is the duty of the Court to remove that cancerous growth."
"Lieutenant Sokarl withdrew his application for the specific consideration by the Court of a ruling on insanity, on the under-
standing that the mental condition of Smith would have prior consideration in the Court's deliberation. After a further
retirement of 45 minutes the Court returned, and the President read the verdict:- "The Court in close session and with
secret ballot finds you Guilty. Again in close session and with secret ballot sentences you to be hanged."
"The verdict and sentence are subject to review by Smith's commanding officer and by the staff of General Eisenhower.
Smith can make an application to President Roosevelt for a pardon."
Smith was subsequently hanged on 8 May 1945.
Sir Peter David George Terry   [GCB 1982]
Following an unsuccessful assassination attempt by the IRA, Sir Peter was dubbed by the Press as "The Man with Nine
Lives," due to his extraordinary luck in surviving with nine wounds. The fact of the attack was reported in 'The Times'
of 19 September 1990:-
'Air Vice-Marshal Sir Peter Terry, the former governor of Gibraltar, and his wife, were shot and injured in an apparent IRA
attack at their home in Staffordshire last night. A gunman was seen running away from the scene of the shooting in Milford.
'Sir Peter, aged 63, was shot in the stomach, face, arm and leg with a 9mm automatic machine pistol as he sat reading in
a rear room of his house. Lady Terry, in an adjoining room, was hit by a ricochet bullet which went through an internal wall.
'An ambulance that went to Sir Peter's aid picked up Nicholas Burbridge, a consulting anaesthetist, who lives in the same
village. Tony Renshaw, chief ambulance officer for Staffordshire, said Sir Peter was still conscious when the ambulance
crew arrived but he had a severe face wound and could not speak.
'Mr Burbridge set up fluid drips in the house and continued them in the ambulance on the way to Stafford district general
hospital, where Sir Peter underwent three houses of surgery. Lady Terry was also taken to hospital and treated for a
minor eye injury. She was waiting at the hospital after treatment so that she could see her husband when he came out
of the operating theatre. The couple's daughter, Elizabeth, was treated for shock but later released.
'John Lotz, a consultant surgeon, said early this morning that there was every likelihood sir Peter would pull through: "At
present, the situation is stable and no one is particularly worried."
'The attack was made at about 9pm. The curtains were only partly drawn. Police recovered three bullets and sealed off
the area of the house, which is surrounded by open heathland and woodland on the main Stafford-Lichfield road.
Detectives from Scotland Yard's anti-terrorist branch travelled to the scene.
'Sir Peter was governor of Gibraltar from 1985 to 1989 and was in charge when SAS soldiers shot and killed three IRA
terrorists there in March 1988.'
Subsequently, further information appeared in the 'Daily Mail' on 20 September 1990:-
'The remarkable survival story of IRA shooting victim Sir Peter Terry was revealed yesterday. Four shots hit him in the
head and body, leaving nine wounds. Two of the bullets were 2 millimetres from the brain. They were 'the thickness of
a cornflake' away, said one surgeon.
'But the 63-year-old former Governor of Gibraltar, in charge during the Death on the Rock shootings of 1988, came through.
He was recovering last night after more than six hours of the most delicate surgery. But Sir Peter was very lucky to be
alive, said surgeons from the six-strong team who carried out the operations at Stafford general hospital. Facial surgeon
Peter Leopard used six stainless steel plates to rebuild Sir Peter's right jaw, shattered by bullet that fragmented. Mr Leopard
said there was 'enormous secondary damage' needing further operations in the months ahead.
'The two bullets lying close to the brain were also removed after entering behind the left eye. Other injuries were to the
right arm and the right wrist and knee, both fractured, the right thigh, from which a bullet was recovered; and the abdomen,
grazed by a bullet, later recovered from Sir Peter's hip.'
Sir William Thwaites  [KCMG 1919 and KCB 1927]
Sir William appears to have had his ego somewhat bruised after a traffic incident, as reported in "The Daily Telegraph" on
26 Jul 1924:-
'Major General Sir Richard [sic] Thwaites, of the Junior United Service Club, Charles-street, was summoned at Marlborough-
street yesterday, for aiding and abetting James Edward Jones, of a motor-transport company, R.A.S.C. Depot, Kensington,
in failing to stop at the request of the police, a motor-car which Jones was driving. Jones was summoned in respect of that
offence and driving in a dangerous manner. The defendants, who pleaded not guilty, were represented by Mr. Rollo.
Mr. Herbert Muskett, for the Commissioner of Police, said the general was in full uniform, and was proceeding on military
business, and the driving in a dangerous manner took place at a dangerous spot at the bottom of Waterloo-place. The car
was being driven down Waterloo-place, and passed the temporary refuge at the bottom in Pall-mall on the wrong side, and
there was nearly a collision between the general's car and a 'bus. The constable pointed out to the general's chauffeur the
danger to the traffic. The general said to his chauffeur, "Drive on, don't stop," and the car proceeded. The constable got
on a four-seater and gave chase, overtaking the general's car, which stopped. The general said: "I take the responsibility
of this," and said he would report the matter to Brigadier-General [Sir William Thomas Francis] Horwood [Commissioner of
the Metropolitan Police 1920-1928 - see separate note regarding him] and that he, the general, was in a hurry. The
constable saluted the general after taking particulars. The general, added Mr. Muskett, did, in fact, report the matter to
General Horwood.
'General Thwaites, giving evidence, said he was holding an inspection of a division in Hyde Park that evening, and he was
in a hurry to get there. He said to the constable, "What is it all about?" and the constable took not the slightest notice
