| Sir (Frederic) Truby King [Kt Bach 1925] | |||||||
| The following biography of Truby King appeared in the August 1960 issue of the monthly Australian magazine "Parade":- | |||||||
| 'Early in 1913 a stooped, little New Zealand children's doctor arrived in London on the first lap of an international tour. | |||||||
| Famed at home for saving more than 1000 lives a year and making New Zealand's infant death rate the world's lowest, | |||||||
| the medico received different treatment in Great Britain. His daring and revolutionary methods of baby feeding and hygiene | |||||||
| were mocked at. "This colonial popinjay presumes to tell us how we may treat our offspring," thundered one Harley Street | |||||||
| doctor. The "colonial popinjay" was Frederic Truby King, today universally acknowledged as the foremost pioneer of child | |||||||
| welfare and treatment of the insane. | |||||||
| 'Born on April 1, 1858, King was raised on his father's property near New Plymouth, N.Z. Stooped and hollow-chested, he | |||||||
| was unfitted for farming work and went into banking. As he grew older, he began to believe that clumsy parental care had | |||||||
| made him a human wreck. Determined to save others from falling into the same plight, he decided to embark on a medical | |||||||
| career. His father sent him to Edinburgh University where, despite a resurgence of his tubercular complaint and an increas- | |||||||
| ing blindness of the left eye, Truby King took honours in examinations and emerged with a first-class medical degree. | |||||||
| 'Returning to N.Z. in 1888, he equipped, designed and administered a new ward of Wellington General Hospital. Later he | |||||||
| took charge of the notorious Seacliff Mental Hospital, a place of suffering where the mentally deficient were shockingly | |||||||
| ill-treated. At Seacliff, Truby King embarked on the first great work of his career. Shocked by the antiquated and | |||||||
| uninformed methods used to treat the mentally sick, the youthful medico set out to institute a new system of asylum | |||||||
| administration. On Truby King's first morning at the hospital, he summoned the staff and told them they would be fired on | |||||||
| the spot if they showed the slightest signs of violence toward the inmates. Patients were set to work in gardens planned | |||||||
| and planted by King himself. They were given street clothes and patiently taught how to make pottery, cook, sew and | |||||||
| keep themselves clean. Every inch of the building was swept scrupulously clean and gay colours were used in carpets, | |||||||
| curtains and wallpapers. The patients were summoned to conferences where they were asked their opinion on proposed | |||||||
| improvements to the hospital grounds. | |||||||
| 'It was the first of such institutions in the world and before long, Seacliff had a higher percentage of cures than any other | |||||||
| asylum in the southern hemisphere. Though the works of Freud and other pioneer mental health authorities were unknown | |||||||
| to him, King paralleled their work by digging deeply into the causes of insanity and emotional instability. Like Freud, King | |||||||
| gently questioned his patients about their past lives. Among other causes of derangement, he believed that "cramming" for | |||||||
| examinations during the critical years of adolescence often permanently impaired mental stability. When he gave this | |||||||
| opinion during lecture tours, Truby King was soundly drubbed by physicians, parents and teachers. Simultaneously, a Royal | |||||||
| Commission was set up to investigate his "unusual and reckless conduct" in using official money to beautify Seacliff. When | |||||||
| the commission had heard King's evidence he was cleared of all charges and warmly congratulated on his improvements at | |||||||
| Seacliff. | |||||||
| 'By the time King's radical therapy had taken root, however, the little doctor was busy on a new field of research. Most of | |||||||
| the asylum's food consisted of fresh vegetables and dairy produce. But the cattle's milk yield was low. One in five calves | |||||||
| perished from acute intestinal infections, largely because their dams suffered from some obscure ailment which tainted the | |||||||
| milk. Truby King began a series of experiments with artificial feeding, which produced a special type of milk. Calves had | |||||||
| coloured labels placed around their necks and were fed from similarly-coloured buckets. In this way King discovered that | |||||||
| growth in calves could be influenced by changes in the composition of the milk. These tests led him to the more important | |||||||
| of baby diet. Discovering that the offspring of some of the asylum inmates seemed to flourish on his high-protein milk | |||||||
| cultures, King, armed with adoption permits, invaded several hovels in the area. From these, he took 13 motherless child- | |||||||
| ren. He carefully examined their pathetically twisted little limbs, their big, staring eyes and unnaturally enlarged stomachs. | |||||||
| 'After bathing the children, he placed them in a playpen which was constantly exposed to the sun. In contrast to their | |||||||
| cramped clothing, they were encouraged to play naked. Each day they were fed with special milk foods. Week by week, | |||||||
| their health improved. Eyes began to sparkle and cheeks grew ruddy and firm. Soon, to King's delight, the children were | |||||||
| full of bounce. | |||||||
| 'By 1899, Truby King's little play-pen had grown to a large nursery of orphans and the children of sick women. He travelled | |||||||
| the country advising mothers to breast-feed their children wherever possible. Declaring that she was shocked to think of | |||||||
| "the crimes she had perpetrated on her own children by depriving them of proper sunlight and nourishment," the governor | |||||||
| general's wife, Lady Plunket, gave King her official patronage. Indifference grew to fierce enthusiasm as King harangued an | |||||||
| ignorant public. Soon he had every mother in N.Z. on his side. Lady Plunket clinics were established [and the Plunket | |||||||
| Society founded in 1907]. | |||||||
| 'King's eccentricities became famous throughout Australasia. He had a habit of posting up on people's doors: "Take break- | |||||||
| fast by all means, but make sure you have a walk first." Once he abandoned his horse and buggy while travelling to Waitati | |||||||
| and returned to Seacliff by train. On his return, he was asked "Where did you leave the horses?" "Good heavens!" King | |||||||
| exclaimed. "Did I go by buggy? Then they must be somewhere between here and Waitati." One day some male asylum | |||||||
| patients were travelling down the coast for a day's outing. A special train carriage was reserved for them. When the train | |||||||
| moved into the platform, two drunks were seated in the carriage. "Move on, if you please," King said to them. They didn't | |||||||
| stir. The doctor motioned his charges to sit inside. Then he turned once more to the drunks. "I hope you enjoy the trip," | |||||||
| he said. "These mental patients will make the best of your company." The drunks picked up their hats and fled. | |||||||
| 'Early in 1913, King went to London to take part in history's first English speaking child welfare conference. Grey-haired, | |||||||
| still painfully thin and untidy, with his blind eye covered in a patch, the medico became the laughing stock of Harley St. | |||||||
| When he tried to improve conditions for England's under-nourished millions of working-class children, he ran smack into | |||||||
| officialdom. The government of the day blocked his every move with excuses of "too much expense" or "too early for such | |||||||
| new-fangled notions." All he wanted was a few airy rooms that could be converted into baby clinics, nurses and a chance | |||||||
| to tell mothers about his methods. | |||||||
| 'Realising the poverty of sunlight and air in London, King longed to start a migration of orphans to country houses, where | |||||||
| they could grow healthy on farm produce. One morning he was walking down the Strand when a ragged urchin, its legs | |||||||
| twisted by rickets and hair full of lice, begged him for "a copper, mister." King took the lad home, built him up on a careful | |||||||
| careful diet, then returned him to his parents. News of the incident travelled. King was at last permitted funds to open a | |||||||
| mothercraft school, which was staffed by a devoted handful of N.Z. nurses. | |||||||
| 'Truby King schools and clinics mushroomed all over England and America. Before the New Zealander's arrival, two-thirds | |||||||
| of Britain's 2,500,000 teenage army recruits had been found unfit. Of every 1000 babies born, 103 had died, compared with | |||||||
| 48 in New Zealand. In the next generation, thanks to King's influence, it was as though a new race had been born. Height | |||||||
| and weight increased. Science freely acknowledged the effect of careful sunlight therapy, scrupulous diet and breast- | |||||||
| feeding on the young. | |||||||
| 'In 1920 King was appointed Director of Child Welfare in N.Z. Four [five] years later he was knighted. But every penny of | |||||||
| his income was poured away in building new clinics, touring the world preaching his methods and helping the destitute. | |||||||
| When he was invited to Sydney by Australia's chief medical officer in the mid-1920s, the almost penniless medico set up | |||||||
| house in a ramshackle slum dwelling which he immediately crammed with scores of little bottles. In the bottles were food | |||||||
| samples which he examined constantly to study their reaction to temperatures and different tinctures of germs. By degrees | |||||||
| he made important new discoveries in the preserving of foodstuffs which led to the high-grade bottling and casing of | |||||||
| perishable goods used today. But by now he was failing to live up to his own precepts. He was living indoors and going for | |||||||
| long stretches without meals. Truby King's health, never robust, began to weaken. His milk products factory in Sydney | |||||||
| flopped. Never out of debt, King infuriated his Scottish wife Mary by sending long telegrams to his well-wishers. When she | |||||||
| asked him to make the telegrams shorter, King would say: "My dear, my brother once cut a telegram. The result was awful. | |||||||
| He received a merry-go-round when he had ordered 600ft. of barbed wire." | |||||||
| 'In England in the 1930s, King was invited to a royal garden party by one of his great admirers, King George V. Stuffy | |||||||
| dowagers gazed at him haughtily as the doctor wandered into the palace grounds clad in a sloppy old mackintosh, woollen | |||||||
| mittens, Wellington boots and a battered top hat. Spotting the bearded monarch, King dashed up, peering through thick | |||||||
| spectacles, and said: "Why it's you!" Poking George V in side with his umbrella, he went on: "I may be 70 years old, sir, but | |||||||
| I'm going to work for you at least 10 years more!" The King burst out laughing. Bernard Shaw, calling on King in 1934 | |||||||
| "because you are the greatest man in N.Z.," heaped the confused little man with a hail of eulogy. | |||||||
| 'Stricken with neuralgia three years later, King died bankrupt in February, 1938. In his honour, the first state funeral for a | |||||||
| private citizen in N.Z.'s history was held [He was later honoured with a postage stamp in 1957]. At the cemetery, many | |||||||
| sturdy children, who had been reared with the help of the Truby King clinics, helped lower the coffin of N.Z.'s greatest | |||||||
| humanitarian into a simple grave.' | |||||||
| Sir Charles Edward Kingsford-Smith [Kt Bach 1932] | |||||||
| In Anthony Barker's "When was That? - Chronology of Australia" [John Ferguson, Sydney 1988], under the date of 3 | |||||||
| January 1907, there is an entry which reads "First rescue by Bondi Life Saving Club - of two schoolboys, one of them | |||||||
| Charles Kingsford Smith." | |||||||
| The Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club's webpage states that the club "was established on the 21st February 1907 at the | |||||||
| Royal Hotel, Bondi Beach, by a group of like-minded bathers. The club was responsible for introducing surf lifesaving to | |||||||
| Australia and pioneered the famous surf reel and line. A notable early rescue was one of a young boy by the name of | |||||||
| Charlie Smith who later went on to become the famous aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. This rescue was carried | |||||||
| out on January 2nd, 1907, prior to the club being formed and not with the famous reel which wasn't invented yet." | |||||||
| The story of the rescue was reported in the Sydney "Daily Telegraph" the following day:- | |||||||
| 'Another illustration was furnished yesterday afternoon at Bondi Beach of the dangers attendant upon surf bathing. | |||||||
| Incidentally, also, of the inadequate life-saving appliances available. Surf bathing has grown in popularity during recent | |||||||
| years, and Bondi, perhaps, attracts as large a number of those who engage in the pastime as any beach on the coast. | |||||||
| 'Yesterday afternoon, at about 3 o'clock, the cry was raised that two boys were drowning. The lads who were in difficulties | |||||||
| were Rupert Swallow, of 146 Flinders-street, City, and his cousin, Charles Smith, of Yates-street, McMahon's Point, North | |||||||
| Sydney. Willing hands quickly got out the life-line, while several persons raced round to the baths and gave the alarm to | |||||||
| Mr. J. Hellings, the lessee, who on several occasions has been instrumental in saving life in the breakers. To divest himself | |||||||
| of his clothes and don a bathing costume was the work of less than a minute for Mr. Hellings. Hurrying over the rocks, he | |||||||
| dived in, and looking towards the beach, saw a lad in swimming costume being brought in by a young man, who was almost | |||||||
| fully dressed. The young man was Mr. James McCarthy, of Rose-street, Darlington, who had been one of the first to go | |||||||
| with the life-line to the rescue. His bravery was the more conspicuous from the fact that he only waited to take off his | |||||||
| coat and vest, and that, furthermore, he is partially crippled. | |||||||
| 'Close behind McCarthy was another young man to whom McCarthy handed over the boy he had saved (Smith). That done, | |||||||
| he swam out further in the direction of where Mr. Hellings was searching. Mr. Hellings, having witnessed the rescue of | |||||||
| Smith, had looked to the beach for directions as to where his assistance was required, and the spectators waving frantic- | |||||||
| ally seawards, he turned that way. McCarthy had got to within about 20 yards of Mr. Hellings, however, when he found | |||||||
| that the life-line would not reach any further. Then, discarding the line, he swam out and searched with Mr. Hellings until | |||||||
| he was almost exhausted. The other lad, Rupert Swallow, had meanwhile been rescued by Messrs. | |||||||
| 'The other lad, Rupert Swallow, had meanwhile been rescued by Messrs. Warwick Wilces, of Croydon, Frank Hull, of Little | |||||||
| Underwood-street, Paddington, and others, but McCarthy, feeling sure that he had seen someone further seaward, and in | |||||||
| difficulties, persisted in the search as long as he could, but neither he nor Mr. Hellings could discover anything to | |||||||
| substantiate their fears. Then they returned to shore. | |||||||
| 'Swallow recovered soon after he was brought ashore. Smith fared much worse, but, thanks to the efforts of Nurse | |||||||
| Sweeney, of Quirindi, who is on a visit to Sydney, and happened providentially to be on the beach yesterday he was | |||||||
| resuscitated after about half an hour. In the meantime Dr. Ludlow had been communicated with, and the boy, pronounced | |||||||
| out of danger, was removed to his home. | |||||||
| 'There is great conflict of opinion as to whether there was a third person in need of assistance, but the experience of | |||||||
| Messrs Hellings and McCarthy, endorsed as it is by a fisherman who went out with his boat, and made a further unsuccess- | |||||||
| ful search, rather tends to support the comforting idea that on this occasion at least the treacherous undertow has failed | |||||||
| to find a victim.' | |||||||
| And yet Kingsford-Smith's entry in the "Australian Dictionary of Biography" states that the Kingsford-Smith family returned | |||||||
| to Australia from Canada in 1907. Maybe they arrived back in Australia on either the 1st or 2nd of January 1907, and | |||||||
| Charles immediately hit the beach? | |||||||
| Sir Edward Pemberton Leach VC [KCVO 1906 and KCB 1909] | |||||||
| Leach was born in Ireland, but educated in England. In 1866 he was commissioned into the Royal Engineers. He was | |||||||
| serving with the Army in Afghanistan during the Second Anglo-Afghan War when he won his Victoria Cross. The citation | |||||||
| in the London Gazette (issue 24790, page 7265) reads:- | |||||||
| "For having, in action with the Shinwarris near Maidanah, Afghanistan, on the 17th March, 1879, when covering the | |||||||
| retirement of the Survey Escort who were carrying Lieutenant Barclay, 45th Sikhs, mortally wounded, behaved with the | |||||||
| utmost gallantry in charging, with some men of the 45th Sikhs, a very much larger number of the enemy. In this encounter | |||||||
| Captain Leach killed two or three of the enemy himself, and he received a severe wound from an Afghan knife in the left | |||||||
| arm. Captain Leach's determination and gallantry in this affair, in attacking and driving back the enemy from the last | |||||||
| position, saved the whole party from annihilation." | |||||||
| Leach remained in the Army and rose to the rank of General by the time of his retirement in 1912. | |||||||
| Sir Hubert Aloysius Leicester [nominated Kt Bach 1939, but never invested] | |||||||
| Leicester's name was included in a listing of new knights, effective from 8 June 1939, shown in the London Gazette of | |||||||
| 8 June 1939 (issue 34633, page 3852). However, he died on 14 June 1939. His widow was later granted the style of a | |||||||
| knight's widow by a notice in the Gazette on 4 August 1939 (issue 34651, page 5392):- | |||||||
| 'The King has been graciously pleased, by Warrant under His Majesty's Royal Sign Manual, to grant unto Agnes, widow of | |||||||
| the late Hubert Aloysius Leicester, Esq., the style, title, rank and precedence to which she would have been entitled had | |||||||
| her husband survived to receive the degree, style and title of a Knight Bachelor which His Majesty had signified his intention | |||||||
| of conferring upon him.' | |||||||
| Sir Wilbraham Oates Lennox VC [KCB 1891] | |||||||
| Lennox was a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers during the Crimean War. On 20 November 1854, Lennox, with a working | |||||||
| party of 100 men, entrenched themselves in rifle-pits captured from the enemy. They held the pits all night, despite | |||||||
| extreme exposure to attack. The citation for the Victoria Cross in the London Gazette (issue 21971, page 656) reads:- | |||||||
| "Cool and gallant conduct in establishing a lodgement in Tryon's Rifle Pit, and assisting to repel the assaults of the enemy. | |||||||
| This brilliant operation drew forth a special order from General Canrobert." | |||||||
| After further service during the Indian Mutiny and the Anglo-Egyptian War in 1882, he reached the rank of Lieutenant | |||||||
| General in 1888. | |||||||
| Sir Owen Edward Pennefather Lloyd VC [KCB 1923] | |||||||
| Born in County Roscommon, Lloyd was a Surgeon-Major in the Army Medical Service during the Kachin Hills expedition in | |||||||
| Burma in 1892-93 to suppress a rising by local tribesmen. The action which led to his award of the Victoria Cross is | |||||||
| described in the citation in the London Gazette of 2 January 1894 (issue 26472, page 1):- | |||||||
| "During the attack on the Sima Post by Kachins, on the 6th January last, Surgeon-Major Lloyd on hearing that the | |||||||
| Commanding Officer, Captain Morton (who had left the fort to visit a picket about 80 yards distant) was wounded, at once | |||||||
| ran out to his assistance under a close and heavy fire, accompanied by Subadar Matab Singh. | |||||||
| "On reaching the wounded Officer, Surgeon-Major Lloyd sent Subadar Matab Singh back for further assistance, and | |||||||
| remained with Captain Morton till the Subadar returned with five men of the Magwe Battalion of Military Police, when he | |||||||
| assisted in carrying Captain Morton back to the fort, where that Officer died a few moments afterwards. | |||||||
| "The enemy were within ten or fifteen paces keeping up a heavy fire which killed three men of the picket, and also Bugler | |||||||
| Puma Singh. This man accompanied Captain Morton from the fort, showed great gallantry in supporting him in his arms | |||||||
| when wounded, and was shot while helping to carry him back to the fort. (The Native Officer and five sepoys above | |||||||
| alluded to have been awarded the Order of Merit)." | |||||||
| Lloyd eventually reached the rank of Major-General. | |||||||
| Sir Richard Lloyd-Roberts [Kt Bach 1951] | |||||||
| News of Sir Richard's death and his subsequent obituary appeared in "The Times" of 30 July 1956:- | |||||||
| Sir Richard Lloyd-Roberts, C.B.E., ....... was one of the earliest labour relations officers employed by a private industrial | |||||||
| concern. | |||||||
| 'Born on June 23, 1885, the son of the late William Lloyd-Roberts, of Liverpool, he was educated at Liverpool College and | |||||||
| entered the service of the Post Office at the age of 17. When the Labour Exchanges were set up he was one of those | |||||||
| selected to staff them and his experience in this work proved a great help in his later career. It was immediately helpful to | |||||||
| him when in 1916 he was appointed labour officer to Brunner Mond & Co., an enterprise with which in the form of its | |||||||
| successor, Imperial Chemicals, he was to be closely associated for the rest of his life. | |||||||
| 'Though he retired from the post of Chief Labour Officer to I.C.I. in 1948, he remained closely in touch with the firm from | |||||||
| his desk at the Ministry of Labour where he continued to serve until 1951. He was no stranger to the ministry, having | |||||||
| served there as under-secretary for personnel management and welfare during the 1939-45 War, until at the end of 1944 | |||||||
| I.C.I. asked for his release. Since 1952, Sir Richard, who had been knighted in the previous year, had been a member of | |||||||
| the Industrial Disputes Tribunal. | |||||||
| On 29 July 1956, the south and south-west of England were swept by very strong gales, which led to the deaths of a | |||||||
| number of people, both on the sea and on land. One of those was Sir Richard Lloyd-Roberts, of Morants Court, Dunton | |||||||
| Green, aged 71, [who] was killed instantly by the trunk of an old walnut tree which was blown across the drive of his | |||||||
| country mansion. He had just been to post a letter." | |||||||
| Sir Edward Victor Luckhoo [nominated Kt Bach 1970 but never invested] | |||||||
| Sir Edward, a lawyer by profession, was the last Governor General of Guyana from 1969 to 1970, and briefly (Feb- | |||||||
| March 1970) acting President of Guyana. His name was included in the 1970 New Year's Honours List as being an intended | |||||||
| Knight Bachelor. However, Guyana became a republic on 27 February 1970 and left the Queen's Realms. As a result, | |||||||
| Luckhoo never received the accolade or Letters Patent. For a similar case, see Sir Alieu Sulayman Jack. | |||||||
