Sir Eric Merton Miller  [Kt Bach 1976]
Miller committed suicide in September 1977 while under investigation for fraudulently siphoning off large amounts from
his companies. His death was reported in "The Times" of 23 September 1977 as follows:-
'Sir Eric Miller, whose career as head of Peachey Properties, Britain's largest residential property company, is being
investigated by the Director of Public Prosecutions, the fraud squad, and the Department of Trade, shot himself dead
yesterday. He was 50.
'He was found with severe head injuries in the garden of his home, Rathmore Lodge, Little Boltons, Chelsea, by his wife
and daughter early in the morning, a pistol by his side. He died three hours later in hospital.
'A close friend of Sir Harold Wilson and of Lady Falkender, Sir Eric, who was a member of the Labour Party, was knighted
in the former Prime Minister's Resignation Honours last year [the notorious "Lavender List"]. He was a devout Jew. He died
on Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement.
'At the time of his death Sir Eric was the subject of three writs issued by the Department of Trade and four by the
Peachey company. The latter four claimed a total of £265,000 from him. The Department of Trade investigation into his
business is to continue.
'Sir Eric's rise to fortune began at the age of 16, when he entered the office of an estate agent in the West End. By the
age of 24 he had set up in his own business, and by 34 he was a millionaire. He remained inconspicuous, unknown outside
the City, until 1974, when he lent Sir Harold his Bell Jet Ranger helicopter for the Prime Minister's use during the election
campaign.
'He built Peachey Properties into a £40m empire and lived the life of a tycoon, with expensive cars and visits to Annabel's
the fashionable London night club, sometimes in the company of Lady Falkender. He was also a director of Fulham Football
Club.
'Sir Eric's empire began to turn sour on him in March this year [1977], when it was disclosed that a £200,000 deposit had
been paid on a £1m 10-seat executive jet, ordered on behalf of the Peachey company. Directors could recall no boardroom
decision to buy the aircraft, and the order was cancelled 10 days before it was due to be delivered. Sir Eric resigned.
'After a turbulent annual general meeting in May Sir Eric, who then owned 504,000 of Peachey's 24 million shares, was
removed from the board by a vote of the shareholders. Investigations into his business activities began soon afterwards.
'Only a few days ago the Peachey company, now under the chairmanship of Lord Mais, a former Lord Mayor of London
[1972-73], completed a list of the expenses incurred by Sir Eric during his chairmanship; they are in addition to loans
totalling £177,671 obtained from Peachey subsidiaries by him.
'On Monday the Daily Mirror published allegations that Sir Eric had forged a letter purporting to have come from a bank,
said to concern a £130,000 account and typed by a former secretary at Fulham Football Club.
'Lord Mais said yesterday that the company was anxious to obtain money to which it was entitled. He knew of no personal
vendetta against Sir Eric. Sir Harold Wilson, whose home at Ashley Gardens, Victoria, is owned by Peachey Properties,
declined to comment.
'Lord Mais said yesterday: "We want that Department of Trade report completed to make sure there is nothing else." He
added that for the moment, at least, the writs against Sir Eric for the return of money spent by him would cease. The
existing actions would be restarted and new writs would be served only if an examination by the solicitors acting for both
parties had shown that there were assets remaining in Sir Eric's estate after his family had been adequately provided for.
"The last thing we want to do is cause his family any further distress. We will not transfer the war to his widow," he said.
The "Daily Mail's" [edited] story published on the same date reads:-
'The fall from power of Sir Eric Miller at Peachey Properties followed one of the roughest boardroom dog-fights in the City
for years. He tried desperately to hang on - and that made his fall all the harder.
'The City had been uneasy about Peachey for several years. There were rumours. Some Peachey companies had carried
a large number of 'accountancy reservations' - a sign that the auditors were unable to satisfy themselves about certain
items in the accounts. All this led to Sir Eric stepping down as chairman last March. He blamed 'unwelcome publicity.'
No one then objected to him remaining on the board. But the move meant power passed to his replacement, the quiet'
but effective Lord Mais. Lord Mais ordered a merchant bank inquiry. Its findings persuaded the board that Sir Eric must go
altogether.
'Sir Eric paid off personal loans of £177,671 outstanding at the 1975/76 year-end and added £50,000 towards certain
group assets the board was not happy about. But the most serious allegation centred on a sum of £130,000 of company
money which had been credited to his own personal account. In his own defence he showed the board a letter purporting
to come from bankers Keyser Ullman, explaining that the money had been deposited 'in expectation of the acquisition by
the group of a shareholding interest in a European company.'
'Keyser Ullman declared that they had never written such a letter. And this week secretary Gina Mackinney, 37, said she
typed in out at Sir Eric's dictation when she was working for Fulham Football Club, of which he was a director. The
authenticity of this letter has been a focal point of the inquiry by the Scotland Yard Fraud Squad. The £130,000 is part
of £282,000 queried by the auditors. The full bitterness erupted at the annual meeting last May when Sir Eric struggled
vainly  to remain on the board.
'A Peachey company is suing him over a necklace he bought in 1972 for £42,000 from Aspreys on its behalf. Two years
later he sold it back and allegedly kept the £55,000 proceeds for himself. The same company is suing him for £10,000 it
paid for the racehorse Princely Chief, registered in Lady Miller's name in September, 1976.
'Last week another writ was issued against Sir Eric by a Peachey company claiming that in 1972 he procured payment of
£70,000 from its account to an unnamed firm of City stockbrokers. More was certain to have followed. Peachey was also
planning to seek the recovery of £200,000 paid as a deposit on a company executive jet, without the approval of the
board. And two days before his death Sir Eric learnt that he was about to be sent another bill for disputed expenses,
believed to exceed £100,000.'
Sir Ralph Denham Rayment Moor  [KCMG 1897]
Sir Ralph committed suicide in September 1909. The resultant inquest was reported in the "Manchester Guardian" on 17
September 1909:-
"At Mortlake, Surrey, yesterday Dr. Michael Taylor conducted an inquest on the body of Sir Ralph Moor, formerly High
Commissioner for Southern Nigeria, who was found dying on Tuesday in his bedroom at the Homestead, Barnes, with an
empty medicine glass by his bedside.
"Lady Moor said that Sir Ralph came home from Southern Nigeria three or four years ago. Abroad he had good health
considering the climate, but he had had both malaria and black-water fever. He last had black-water fever five years ago.
He suffered after-effects, especially from malaria, and had attacks of it occasionally. He was a martyr to insomnia, and
was in the habit of taking drugs to procure sleep. Sir Ralph was very comfortably off. Since his return he had had a good
deal to occupy his mind, being a director of a number of companies.
"The Coroner: Did your husband say anything about wasps in the garden? Lady Moor: He did speak on Saturday about
wasps in the garden, and he said he had bought something to stop up the nests. The witness saw the package he had
bought on his writing desk. That was on Saturday, and he was quite cheerful then. He was so on Sunday and on Monday.
The latter day he spent in the City attending to business, and, returning home, had his meals as usual, but stayed in his
sitting-room until 11.45. There was nothing unusual in his manner. On the following morning he did not come down to
breakfast, and was found unconscious on his bed.
"The Coroner: You never knew him to say anything that would lead you to think he might take his life? - No, he had always
a horror of it. He was a favourite with everybody, and had no financial troubles, but suffered horrors from insomnia.
"From further evidence it appeared that Sir Ralph seemed as usual when about 7.30 the maid took hot water to his room
and pulled the blinds up. When he was found unconscious an hour later the blinds had been pulled down again.
"Mr G.F. Hovenden said that Sir Ralph was an extremely well-developed man, six feet in height. The brain was larger than
usual, but perfectly healthy. Death was due to asphyxia, resulting from poisoning by cyanide of potassium. Malaria and
black-water fever would do a great deal to destroy a man's nerve. After suffering from malaria he would be more liable to
insomnia.
"The Coroner told the jury that the chemist who sold the poison had complied with the law, the entry in his book showing
that Sir Ralph had purchased two ounces of cyanide of potassium for the purpose of destroying wasps. The chemist had
stated that Sir Ralph was well known to him and had used the poison before.
"The gardener at the Homestead said wasps had been very troublesome in the garden, and on Monday Sir Ralph told him
he had got some stuff with which to kill the wasps if the witness could find the nest.
"The jury at first brought in a verdict of "Death from asphyxia, due to taking cyanide of potassium," adding that there was
no evidence as to what the state of Sir Ralph's mind was at the time he took the poison. The Coroner having pointed out
the desirability of further considering the question as to whether the cyanide of potassium was taken deliberately or by
accident, the jury agreed that Sir Ralph Moor took the poison deliberately while temporarily insane, and after suffering
acutely from insomnia."
Sir James Mouat VC  [KCB 1894]

Mouat was a surgeon in the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons during the Crimean War when he won a Victoria Cross at Balaklava
for his bravery on 26 October 1854. This was the first occasion that a medical man was awarded the Victoria Cross - there
have been 35 other awards of the Victoria Cross to medical men since that time. His citation in the London Gazette of 4
June 1858 (issue 22149, page 2756) reads:-
"For having voluntarily proceeded to the assistance of Lieutenant-Colonel Morris, C.B., 17th Lancers, who was lying
dangerously wounded in an exposed situation after the retreat of the Light Cavalry at the Battle of Balaklava, and having
dressed that officer's wounds in presence of, and under a heavy fire from the enemy. Thus, by stopping a serious
hemorrhage, he assisted in saving that officer's life."
In this action, Mouat was accompanied by Sergeant-Major Charles Wooden of the 17th Lancers. Wooden also received the
Victoria Cross for his bravery.
Mouat continued in the Army Medical Service until his retirement in 1876, by which time he was Surgeon-General. He was
later appointed an Honorary Surgeon to Queen Victoria in 1888.
Sir John Murray  [KCB 1898]
Murray is considered to be the father of modern oceanography. After his death in a motor vehicle accident, the following
obituary appeared in 'The Manchester Guardian' on 17 March 1914:-
'Sir John Murray, K.C.B., of the Challenger Expedition, was killed in a motor accident near Edinburgh yesterday afternoon.
'Sir John was motoring from Glasgow to his home at Granton, Edinburgh, accompanied by his daughter Rhoda. Shortly after
they had left the main road to Edinburgh for a side road which is a short cut to Granton something went wrong with the
brakes, and the car swerved up a bank at the side of the road and overturned. Sir John was instantly killed, and Miss
Murray, who was driving, was seriously injured. A young chauffeur who was in the car escaped only slightly hurt.
'The Queensferry ambulance was summoned, and Miss Murray was conveyed with all speed to the Edinburgh Royal
Infirmary, while the body of Sir John was taken to his home at Granton. Miss Murray recovered consciousness about seven
o'clock last evening, and was removed from the infirmary to a nursing home. There is every hope of her speedy recovery.
'John Murray, who was of Scottish descent, was born at Coburg in Ontario, Canada, in March, 1841. After being educated
in Ontario, at Stirling, and the University of Edinburgh he had his first experience in a long life of travel and exploration in
1868 in a summer voyage in a Scottish whaler to Spitzbergen and the Greenland Sea. But the great opportunity of his life
came in the despatch of H.M.S. Challenger in 1872 on her voyage of circumnavigation of the globe in order to investigate
the oceans of the world in all their aspects - physical, chemical, and biological. Before this time a few researches on a
minor scale had shown that in all probability the abyssal depths of the oceans were not the lifeless wastes they had been
considered to be. This had aroused scientific interest in the ocean basins and ocean waters in general; representations
made to Government by the Royal Society and other scientific bodies met with early success and led to the organisation
of the great deep-sea expedition of the Challenger, the first expedition of its kind, and, as the results were to prove, the
most epoch-making one in the history of British scientific endeavour. All oceans except the Arctic were to be examined,
including the great Southern Ocean as far as the neighbourhood of the great Ice Barrier.
'The Challenger was under the command of Captain (later Admiral Sir George) Nares, R.N., with a scientific staff under
Professor (later Sir) Wyville Thomson, of Edinburgh. John Murray joined as assistant naturalist. From December, 1872 to
May, 1876, the commission of the Challenger lasted, and the results in volume and importance were beyond even the most
sanguine expectations. The entire programme was carried out, and if the Challenger tarried unaccountably in some ports,
her stays resulted in valuable anthropological work and land collections. She made a flying visit to the Antarctic, crossed
the [Antarctic] Circle in the vicinity of Termination Land, south of the Indian Ocean, and was the first scientifically
equipped ship to visit South Polar seas.
'The Challenger expedition laid the foundation of the science of oceanography, and to a great extent still overshadows
all more recent expeditions. Moreover, it proved by scientific deduction that there was undoubtedly an Antarctic continent,
which had been a most debatable point up to that time. John Murray drew a hypothetical outline of that continent from
all the indications available. Except for the discovery of Coats Land, subsequent exploration has not considerably modified
that outline. On the other hand, Murray's theory of bipolarity - that is, the existence of allied faunas in North and South
Polar waters, for which he propounded ingenious explanations - has not stood the test of further research. The question
of the permanence of ocean basins which he supported is still a moot one, but the weight of evidence is now opposed to
it.
'On the return of the Challenger a Government Department was temporarily created to deal with the observations and
collections and the publication of the results. John Murray was first assistant in this, until, in 1882, on the death of Sir
Wyville Thomson, he became director. Only two volumes of the results had then appeared. Under Murray's directorship
48 more large quarto volumes appeared, and the series was complete in 1895. Government little realised the extent of the
task when they first undertook to publish the results, nor did they realise the persistency of Murray, who, on the
Government's hesitation at one time to vote further funds, offered to finish the reports at his own expense. Fortunately,
however, this was not demanded.
'In 1880 in the Knight Errant, and again in 1882 in H.M.S. Triton, Murray took part in the survey of the Faroe-Icelandic
channel and the discovery of the submarine ridge running across it, the Wyville Thomson ridge, which prevents the cold
waters of the deep Arctic Sea from entering the Atlantic. From 1886-1892 Murray, with the assistance of others, was
engaged in the physical survey of the fjords and sea-lochs of Scotland, and in 1897, along with the late Mr. Frederick
Pullar [1875-1901, who perished in the act of rescuing skaters after the ice on which they were skating gave way], he
began an exhaustive survey of the inland lochs of Scotland, which was completed in 1908. In 1897 Murray was responsible
for the despatch of a small expedition under Mr. C[harles] W[illiam] Andrews [1866-1924] for the examination of the coral
atoll Christmas Island, south of Java. Murray developed great commercial interests in the phosphate of lime on this island.
In 1908 Murray defrayed the expenses of a deep-sea expedition in the North Atlantic for four months in the Norwegian
research vessel Michael Sars, lent with her staff by the Norwegian Government for this purpose. Murray did much to
stimulate Antarctic exploration, and no scheme was put forward but had his warm interest. He must be looked on as
largely instrumental in inducing the Government to give a liberal grant to the Discovery in 1901. He gave valuable support
to the Scotia expedition in 1902. Murray maintained a private laboratory in Edinburgh, where he had an almost unique
collection of deep-sea deposits, on which he was the highest living authority.
'In 1898 the German Emperor conferred on John Murray the Prussian Order Pour le Mérite, and then his own country
followed with a K.C.B. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society, and honorary D.Sc. of Cambridge, an honorary LL.D. of
Liverpool  and Edinburgh, and held other degrees. Numerous medals of British and foreign societies fell to his lot. He
married in 1889 Isabel, daughter of the late Thomas Henderson, and had two sons and three daughters.
'Murray was a voluminous writer, and while he did comparatively little detailed and analytical work, which he left to smaller
men, he had a singular power of grasping the essentials in any work and taking a wide outlook on the facts, which gave
his conclusions great value. He left his mark on every branch of geographical science which he touched.'
Sir Philip Neame VC  [KBE 1946]
Neame was a Lieutenant in the 15th Field Company, Corps of Royal Engineers, when he won his Victoria Cross. The citation
in the London Gazette of 18 February 1915 (supplement 29074, page 1700) reads:-
"For conspicuous bravery on the 19th December [1914], near Neuve Chapelle, when, notwithstanding the very heavy rifle
fire and bomb-throwing by the enemy, he succeeded in holding them back and rescuing all the wounded men whom it was
possible to move."
Neame is quoted in the book "Forgotten Voices of the Great War" by Max Arthur [Ebury Press, 2002]. He had been asked
by the commanding officer of a front-line infantry battalion to go forward and strengthen the defences in a recently
captured German trench. "When I got there I saw the officer in command who said the Germans were counter-attacking
with bombs, that his own bombers had all been wounded and that the bombs that were left would not go off. So I went
up to talk to one of the remaining bombers...and discovered that he could not light our own bombs because there were no
fuses left." Fortunately Neame knew how to light the bombs, so he went up to the front and starting lighting the bombs
and throwing them into the German trenches. In this fashion, he was able to hold the treech for 45 minutes, during which
time all of the wounded men were able to be evacuated.
After the war, Neame was a member of Great Britain's shooting team at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, where his team
won the gold medal in the Team 100 metre running deer, double shot competition. As a result, Neame became, and still
remains, the only Victoria Cross recipient to also win an Olympic gold medal.
Neame remained in the Army, serving in India until he returned in 1938 to become Commandant of the Royal Military
Academy at Woolwich, with the rank of Major-General. Following the outbreak of WW2, Neame commanded the British
forces, firstly in Palestine and Trans-Jordan and then in Cyrenaica, where, in April 1941, he was captured by the Germans.
He was in a prisoner of war in Italy until September 1943 when he was released and subsequently made his way to the
Allied Lines. After the end of the war, he was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Guernsey, a role he filled until his eventual
retirement in 1953.
[Sir] James George Smith Neill  [nominated KCB 1857, but not invested]
The London Gazette (issue 22064, page 3851] contains a notice dated 14 November 1857 which reads: "Colonel James
George Neill, of the Madras Fusiliers, and Lieutenant-Colonel John Nicholson [qv], of the 27th Regiment of Bengal Native
Infantry, would have been recommended for the dignity of Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, had they survived."
Shortly afterwards, the London Gazette (issue 22067, page 4127), in an announcement dated 26 November 1857, which
stated that "The Queen  has been pleased to ordain and declare Isabella Neill, the Widow of the late Colonel James George
Neill, of the Madras Fusiliers, shall have, hold, and enjoy the same style, title, place, and precedence to which she would
have been entitled had her Husband, who fell in the gallant discharge of his duty in India, survived, and been invested
with the insignia of a Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, for which honour he would have been
recommended to Her Majesty, as notified in the London Gazette of the 17th instant, had he survived."
[Sir] John Nicholson  [nominated KCB 1857, but not invested]
The London Gazette (issue 22064, page 3851] contains a notice dated 14 November 1857 which reads: "Colonel James
George Neill, of the Madras Fusiliers, and Lieutenant-Colonel John Nicholson [qv], of the 27th Regiment of Bengal Native
Infantry, would have been recommended for the dignity of Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, had they survived."
As he was unmarried, there was no widow to be granted the style of Lady Nicholson.
Sir Robert Howard Nolan  [nominated KBE 1923, but not invested]
In the 1923 King's Birthday Honours list, Robert Sydney Nolan was shown as being promoted to a Knight Commander of the
British Empire ("in recognition of his public services"), but unfortunately he died a few weeks later, before he could be
invested. Subsequently, a notice appeared the London Gazette (issue 32922, page 2606) dated 27 March 1924 which read
"The King has been pleased, by Warrant under His Majesty's Royal Sign Manual, bearing date the 10th instant, to ordain
and decree that Octavia Jane Nolan, widow of Robert Howard Nolan, Esq., C.B.E., of Auckland, New Zealand, shall have,
hold and enjoy the style, title, place and precedence to which she would have been entitled had her husband survived to
be invested with the Insignia of a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire."
Sir Charles Richard Mackey O'Brien  [KCMG 1920]

O'Brien, together with five fellow army ensigns [second lieutenants], was extremely fortunate when he arrived seconds
too late to catch a boat in 1878. The boat was the "Princess Alice," a paddle-steamer which a few minutes later collided
with another boat and sank, with the loss of over 650 lives. The following obituary, which mentions this incident, appeared
in "The Times" on 2 December 1935:-
"Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Charles O'Brien, K.C.M.G., Governor of the Seychelles from 1912 to 1918, and Governor and
Commander-in-Chief of Barbados from 1918-1925, died at his residence, Crabtree, Headley, Bordon, on Friday, at the age
of 75. He had a varied career as a regimental officer before leaving the Service to become a colonial administrator as his
father had been before him.
"Charles Richard Mackey O'Brien was born on December 13, 1859, the third and youngest son of Lieutenant-Colonel Sir
Terence Nicholls O'Brien, K.C.M.G., who was Governor of Heligoland and afterwards of Newfoundland in his day. From
Felsted he went to Sandhurst, passing out with honours to be gazetted ensign in the 30th (Cambridgeshire) Foot - now
1st Battalion, The East Lancashire Regiment - on May 11, 1878.
"On September 3 of the same year he went from Woolwich to Gravesend for musketry with five other ensigns. When
returning later in the day the six young officers reached the pier too late to catch the boat which had just cast off when
they arrived. The boat they had missed by a couple of seconds was the ill-fated Princess Alice. On this passage from
Gravesend to London she came into collision with the steamer Bywell Castle in Gallion's Reach and sank in five minutes,
only 130 of her 800 passengers being saved. The six ensigns had all been gazetted on the same day, five of them to the
30th, the other transferring to the regiment  shortly afterwards. They all became senior officers with distinguished records
of service, and were accustomed occasionally to have reunion dinners together. [Three of the other five ensigns later
reached General rank - Major General Sir Claude Arthur Bray (KCMG 1918), Brigadier General William George Hamilton (1860-
1940) and Brigadier General Frank Seymour Derham (1858-1941)].
"Charles O'Brien was promoted lieutenant in September, 1880, and spent from April, 1886, to January, 1890, in Burma as
adjutant of the Moulmein Volunteer Rifle Corps, getting his captaincy in May, 1887. In April, 1894, he was appointed
adjutant of the 1st Royal Guernsey Light Infantry (Militia), returning to his battalion five years later. He had been promoted
major on October, 1897. With the 1st East Lancashire, which was in Lieutenant-General C[harles) [later Sir Charles]
Tucker's 7th Division, he saw much service during the South African War, being present at the action of Karee Siding in
March, 1900, after Lord Roberts had occupied Bloemfontein, and then at Vet River, Zand River, and the action near
Johannesburg, in May, operations which culminated in the capture of Pretoria. Later he was appointed president of the
Military Tribunal in Johannesburg, his services being mentioned twice in dispatches, and also in Lord Milner's special
dispatch to the Colonial Office.
"At the end of the South African War he had been Deputy Commissioner of the Transvaal Town Police for a year, and
continued to hold this post until 1908, when he was created C.M.G. He frequently acted as Commissioner, notably during
the Witwatersrand strike. He had retired from the Army in March, 1903, after having received a brevet lieutenant-colonelcy
in the previous June.
"In 1910 he was selected to be Secretary to the Gambia Colony, which appointment he held for about two years, often
acting as Governor. From October, 1912. until 1918 he was Governor of the Seychelles, and in April of the latter year he
was appointed Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Barbados, retiring in September, 1925. He was created K.C.M.G. in
1920. From May to July, 1926, he was Special Government Commissioner in Sierra Leone, and a member of the Colonial
Films Committee in 1929-30."
Sir Luke O'Connor VC  [KCB 1913]
O'Connor was a sergeant in the 23rd Regiment of Foot during the Crimean War, where he won a Victoria Cross for his
actions at the Battle of the Alma on 20th September 1854. The Victoria Cross did not exist at the time of his bravery, but
when it was instituted in 1856 it was made retroactive so as to cover the period of the Crimean War. His citation in the
London Gazette of 24 February 1857 (issue 21971, page 659) reads:-
"[O'Connor] was one of the centre Serjeants at the Battle of the Alma, and advanced between the Officers, carrying the
colours. When near the redoubt, Lieutenant Anstruther, who was carrying a colour, was mortally wounded, and he was
shot in the breast at the same time, and fell; but, recovering himself, snatched up the colour from the ground, and
continued to carry it till the end of the action, although urged by Captain Granville to relinquish it, and go to the rear, on
account of his wound; was recommended for, and received his commission for his services at the Alma. Also behaved with
great gallantry at the assault on the Redan, 8th September, 1855, where he was shot through both thighs."
Luke O'Connor has the distinction of being the first man in the Army to perform an action that was subsequently rewarded
with the Victoria Cross. He later achieved the rank of Major-General.

Sir Michael Francis O'Dwyer  [KCSI 1913 and GCIE 1917]
After a career in the Indian Civil Service, O'Dwyer was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of the Punjab in 1912, retaining that
office until 1919. It was during his term in office that the infamous Amritsar Massacre took place, an action which O'Dwyer
endorsed. O'Dwyer was assassinated in London in March 1940 by an Indian revolutionary in an act of vengeance. The
following [edited] report appeared in "The Times" of 14 March 1940:-
"Sir Michael O'Dwyer was shot dead, and Lord Zetland, Secretary of State for India, and two other distinguished Indian
administrators were wounded when shots were fired by a man in the audience at the close of a public meeting in London
yesterday. Lord Zetland escaped with a bullet graze, and Lord Lamington and Sir Louis Dane, the other victims, both
received arm injuries.
"The four victims of the attack had all spoken at a meeting which was held at Caxton Hall. The meeting had just ended and
the audience were on the point of leaving when the shots were fired. A powerfully built man, apparently an Indian aged
about 40, came close to the group of speakers and officials as they were saying farewell to one another, and fired one
shot after another from a pistol.
"The first bullet, as it appeared to onlookers, killed Sir Michael O'Dwyer, passing through his body from the back.
Succeeding shots wounded Lord Zetland, who fell to the ground; Sir Louis Dane, whose arm was broken; and Lord
Lamington, who received a wound which cut the main vein in his wrist. The assailant was seized, overpowered and held
till the police arrived to arrest him.
"The assailant was removed in custody. The police were reinforced by others and by detectives, who asked the company
to go down to the court room on the ground floor. Those who had been present at the meeting were then taken
individually to other rooms, and asked to make statements on the circumstances to the police.
"Several persons had narrow escapes when the shots were fired, since they were closely grouped in front of the dais with
the speakers and officials of the two societies [the East India Association and the Central Asian Society]. Two whom shots
narrowly missed were Sir Percy Sykes and Sir Frank Brown, honorary secretary of the East India Association.
"Lord Zetland said later that the shot which hit him could not have been fired from more than two yards away. He
continued: "I felt a sharp pain in my ribs. It rather knocked me out, and while I was lying down I heard some other
shooting going on, but did not see what happened....It was found afterwards that it was a bullet which had struck me."
The assassin was Shaheed Udham Singh, an Indian revolutionary. Singh had been deeply affected by the Jallianwala Bagh
massacre in Amritsar in April 1919, where hundreds [other sources put the figure at over 1000] of unarmed Indian
protestors and pilgrims attending a religious festival had been killed when British troops fired into the crowd. Singh held
O'Dwyer, who was Lieutenant-Governor of the Punjab at the time, and who had supported the massacre, to be responsible
for the deaths.
Singh was charged with O'Dwyer's murder and was subsequently tried at the Old Bailey on 4 June. He was convicted and
sentenced to death, being hanged on 31 July 1940. Singh remains somewhat of a hero in India, with several streets and
districts named after him, together with a museum in Amritsar dedicated to him.
