Alfred Billson | ||
MP for Barnstaple 1892‑1895, Halifax 1897‑1900 and Staffordshire North West 1906‑1907
The following [edited] report appeared in The Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser on 10 July 1907:-
Profound sensation was caused in the House of Commons last night by the sudden death of Sir Alfred Billson, one of the recently-created Knights [see more on this later].
The hon. member was seized with a fainting fit in one of the lobbies, and medical assistance was immediately summoned, both Sir Walter Foster and Sir William Collins being summoned from the Chamber. Unconscious, Sir Alfred was at once removed on an ambulance through the crowded lobbies to the private room of Mr. Emmott, the Deputy Speaker, where he succumbed without having regained consciousness.
As soon as the seriousness of the hon. gentleman's condition became apparent, a hypodermic injection of ether was made, but the pulse was becoming feebler each moment, and almost directly the heart ceased to beat. In view of the fact that the death took place in a royal palace the body will have to remain in the Parliamentary precincts till the Royal Coroner has given his order for its removal.
The report refers to the deceased member as "Sir Alfred". His name had appeared on the list of intended knights announced in the 1907 King's Birthday Honours List, but he died before he could be invested. Subsequently, the London Gazette of 1 October 1907 included a notice stating that "The King has been pleased by Warrant under His Majesty's Royal Sign Manual, bearing date 19th August, 1907 to ordain and declare that Lilla Billson, widow and relict of Alfred Billson, late representative in Parliament for the North-Western division of the county of Stafford, have, hold and enjoy the style, title, place and precedence to which she would have been entitled had her husband survived to receive the honour of Knight Bachelor at the hands of His Majesty."
