Thomas James Mitchell
MP for Mid Ulster 1955
Mitchell was elected MP for Mid Ulster at the General Election held on 26 May 1955. At the time of his election, however, he was in prison serving a 10-year sentence for treason felony. On 18 July 1955, the House of Commons voted 197-63 to nullify the result and call a by-election.
The by-election was held on 11 August 1955 and was again won by Mitchell, who increased his majority from 260 at the General Election to 806 at the by-election. The losing candidate, Charles Beattie, petitioned against this result, and on 7 October 1955, the election result was overturned and Beattie was declared elected. Within a few months however Beattie was declared to be ineligible to sit, since at the time of his election he was a member of two panels and an appeals tribunal under Northern Ireland national insurance legislation, which were viewed as being offices of profit under the Crown.
As a result of Beattie's disqualification, a second by-election was held on 8 May 1956. Once again, and for the third time within a year, Mitchell was a candidate, but this time was defeated. Mitchell stood as a candidate for Mid Ulster at the General Elections of 1959, 1964 and 1966, but was defeated on each occasion.
