Sir Patrick Heron‑Maxwell, 5th baronet
From The Glasgow Herald of 2 September 1844, reprinted from the Dumfries Standard:-
It is with feelings of the most painful regret that we record the sudden and melancholy death of Sir Patrick Maxwell, Bart., of Springkell, which took place on Tuesday morning, about nine o'clock. On Monday night, Sir Patrick was returning from Springkell, to Knockhill, where he was residing, when, on the road between Kittlebridge and Ecclefechan, either his horse had fallen with him, (which we are informed it had done a few days previous), or from some other cause not ascertained, he was thrown on the road, and received a severe injury, which rendered him insensible. He was shortly after found and carried to the farm-house of Caldwellknow, where medical aid was procured, and every available means had recourse to, in order to effect his recovery, but all to no avail, as he gradually sank till next morning he expired.
The special remainder to the baronetcy of Hervey‑Bathurst created in 1818
From the London Gazette of 3 Oct 1818 (issue 17404, page 1767):-
His Royal Highness the Prince Regent has been pleased, in the name and on behalf of His Majesty, to direct letters patent to be passed under the Great Seal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, for granting the dignity of a Baronet of the said United Kingdom to Felton Elwill Bathurst Hervey, of Lainston, in the county of Southampton, Esq. Colonel in the Army, Extra Aide-de-Camp to His Royal Highness the Prince Regent, Lieutenant-Colonel of the 14th Regiment of Light Dragoons, and a Companion of the Most Honourable Military Order of the Bath; with remainder, in failure of issue male, to his brother Frederick Anne Hervey, of Clarendon Park, in the county of Wilts, Esq. and his heirs male.
Sir Andrew Ashton Waller Hills, 1st and only baronet
Sir Andrew was created a baronet at the age of only 5 years and 3 months in 1939. He was the son of John Waller Hills (1867‑1938) who had been MP for Durham City 1906‑1922 and Ripon 1925‑1938. John Waller Hills died on 24 December 1938, just prior to the 1939 New Year's Honours List in which he would have been created a baronet had he lived. His son was therefore created a baronet in his place, and Sir Andrew's mother was granted the style of a baronet's widow.
The following report appeared in the London Telegraph on 10 February 1939:-
It was announced last night that the five-year-old son of the late Major J.W. Hills is to receive the baronetcy which, but for his death, would have been conferred on Major Hills in the New Year's Honours List.
Major Hills, who was M.P. for Ripon and was formerly Financial Secretary to the Treasury, died on Dec. 24. The following announcement was issued last night from 10 Downing Street:
'The King has been pleased to approve that the dignity of a baronetcy of the United Kingdom be conferred upon Andrew Ashton Waller Hills, son of the late Major the Rt Hon John Waller Hills, D.C.L., M.P., whose name would have been submitted to his Majesty for the conferment of a baronetcy in the New Year Honours List but for his death on Dec. 24, 1938. The King has also been pleased to approve that Mary Grace Hills, widow of the late Major the Rt Hon John Waller Hills, D.C.L., M.P., be granted the style, title, place and precedence of the widow of a baronet.'
Mrs. Hills, who lives in Palace Gardens-terrace, Kensington, said last night: "I am very much touched at the honour which has been bestowed upon us in recognition of my husband's life work. He was a very modest man by nature and I do not think he ever gave a thought to such a thing as a title. When he was very ill, about a week before he died, he received an intimation that his name would be submitted for the New Year's Honours, and he was tremendously grateful about it because he knew it would fall upon his son. The honour which has been conferred upon my son is what my husband would have hoped for."
Mrs. Hills said she had given the news to her son, who was not old enough yet to comprehend the full meaning of the honour.
Mrs. Hills was the second wife of Major Hills. His first wife died in the year of their marriage, 1897. In 1931, at the age of 64, he married Miss Mary Grace Ashton, the novelist [1908‑1980], who was then 22. She published her first novel at the age of 16.
Major Hills sat for Durham from 1906 to 1922, and for Ripon where he succeeded Viscount Halifax, then Mr. Edward Wood, from 1925.
Unfortunately, Sir Andrew did not live long enough to enjoy his title, since he was knocked down and killed by a bus in Oxford in February 1955, aged only 21. His death was reported in the Daily Telegraph of 7 February 1955:- Sir Andrew Ashton Waller Hills, 21, the first baronet, was knocked down and killed by a bus in St. Giles, Oxford, on Saturday. The title becomes extinct, there being no heir. Sir Andrew, who was umnarried, being an only child." The result of the inquest into his death was reported, again in the Daily Telegraph of 10 March 1955:-
A verdict of accidental death was recorded at an inquest at Oxford yesterday on Sir Andrew Hills, 21, an undergraduate of Balliol College, who was killed by a bus in Oxford last month. A witness, Mr. James Frank Martin, Walton Street, Oxford, said Sir Andrew ran into the path of the bus. The driver had no chance of avoiding him. Sir Andrew seemed to realise the danger. He turned, then either slipped or twisted, and fell. Sir Andrew's mother, Lady Hills, said her son was slightly lame.

Vera, Lady Hodge, widow of Sir Rowland Frederic William Hodge, 1st baronet
The marriage of Sir Rowland Hodge and his wife, Vera, was somewhat less than happy, lasting for only six weeks. Lady Hodge appears to have been a "gold-digger" and when, on the death of Sir Rowland, her share of his estate amounted to one farthing, she attempted to have this amount increased. The following reports detail her total lack of success; firstly from the London Telegraph of 22 February 1952:-
When Sir Rowland Frederic William Hodge, first baronet, shipbuilder, died in 1950 he left one farthing out of his estate of about £34,000 to his widow, "there being no smaller English coin by which she might remember her ill-used husband," said counsel for the widow in the Chancery Division yesterday.
The widow, Vera Lady Hodge, formerly Countess Cathcart, Sterling-street, Knightsbridge, asked Mr. Justice Wynn Parry for reasonable provision out of her husband's estate.
Mr. John Sparrow, for Lady Hodge, said she was Sir Rowland's second wife and she herself had been married twice before. Shortly after the death of Sir Rowland's first wife he met a Miss Enid Patricia O'Dare, who became his mistress for several years.
He met the plaintiff in 1930 when she was 37, nine years after she was divorced from her second husband, the fifth Earl Cathcart. The marriage with Sir Rowland was a case of marry in haste and repent at leisure. It broke up after a few unhappy weeks.
Statements made by Sir Rowland on earlier proceedings were read to the court. In them he said he met Miss O'Dare, a stage dancer, in 1924. A child was born in 1926, Sir Rowland said, and when the child was a few years old they decided to put their relationship on a different footing. "Since then my interest in her has been only fatherly and the boy has been brought up in the supposition that I am his grandfather."
When he met his wife she was heavily in debt. "The whole object was to see how much money she could extract from me. She left after a scene in which she slapped my face."
Lady Hodge, in an affidavit, said her husband had presented an entirely false picture of the early days of the marriage. She left because of his continued relationship with Miss O'Dare. "It was only from a chance remark of the boy that I realised the true state of affairs."
She challenged her husband: "That woman is your mistress and that is your illegitimate child." He replied: "What of it?" "That was what poisoned our relationship," she said.
Cross-examined, Lady Hodge said she was engaged to Sir Rowland for only 10 days before the marriage. Later Miss O'Dare went to live at her husband's country house at Churt, Surrey, and was passed off as his daughter-in-law.
Mr. J.L. Arnold, for the executors of Sir Rowland's will: "Is the implication that they were living in sin?" - It is very strange that she went down there to live.
In 1934 she presented a divorce petition, citing Miss O'Dare, but the case was stopped by the jury and the petition dismissed.
Lady Hodge continued: "When my husband and I parted he paid my debts of £2,500, plus a sum of £3,000 and £1,250 a year. When I married him he told me I could spend £10,000 a year, so naturally I was extravagant."
Counsel: He says you spent £10,000 in the three weeks you were together? - My husband was a very rich man when I married him. She denied she had "done very well out of all this." It had ruined her life.
The case was adjourned till to-day.
The second report appeared the next issue of the Telegraph; i.e. 23 February 1952:-
Vera Lady Hodge, 59, formerly Countess Cathcart, Sterling-street, Knightsbridge, yesterday lost her claim for reasonable provision from the £34,000 estate of her baronet husband, Sir Rowland Frederic William Hodge, 91, shipbuilder. He died in 1950.
Mr. Justice Wynn Parry said in the Chancery Division: "She does not begin to establish a case for any relief under the Act. Though she was left only one farthing in her husband's will she received a total of £35,000 from him over the years. Sir Rowland and his wife lived only about three weeks under the same roof. In my view the truth is that this extremely short and poor marriage broke up because of financial quarrels between the parties, the main blame for which lay on Lady Hodge and not Sir Rowland."
The terms of Sir Rowland's will were intentionally contemptuous. He bequeathed her "one farthing, that being the smallest coin by which she might remember her ill-used husband." He made it clear he was labouring under a strong sense of grievance and a feeling of very considerable bitterness towards her.
She asserted that the real cause for the almost immediate breakdown of the marriage was his liaison with a Miss O'Dare, a stage dancer. The judge did not accept Lady Hodge's story that she was informed of the liaison only after the marriage.
Earlier, Mr. John Arnold, for Sir Rowland's family, said the marriage lasted only six weeks after a 10‑day engagement and in that time Sir Rowland gave Lady Hodge £3,000 in cash, £2,500 to pay her debts and £24 a week free of tax which continued throughout the 20 years until he died. "She has been well recompensed. This is an audacious claim."
Mr. A.J. Belsham, representing other beneficiaries, said: "She was disappointed. She thought she had a wealthy man she could twist round her finger and from whom money would flow freely but it did not flow freely. She gambled away her chances deliberately and took this provision rather than live with her husband. At the time of the marriage he was an elderly gentleman of 71 and she was 37. Sir Rowland's estate was divided between six people, to whom he had real moral obligations."
Dismissing the claim, the judge made no order as to Lady Hodge's costs and directed that respondents' costs should be paid out of the estate.
Sir Thomas Holte, 1st baronet [E 1611]
The Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette of 22 Aug 1894, under the heading of "Some Whimsical Wagers" records "That backing one's opinion through the time-honoured medium of a bet sometimes leads to disastrous consequences, is shown by what was done by Sir Thomas Holte, of Aston. That sportsman, while riding home after hunting, made a wager that dinner would be ready exactly at the time for which it was ordered. For once in a way the cook's punctuality was at fault; Sir Thomas lost his money, and, in his anger, killed the cook."
The Dictionary of National Biography's entry on Holte states that "In July 1608 Holte obtained damages against one William Astgrigg for the slanderous statement made by him that 'Sir Thomas Holte tooke a cleever, and hytt hys cooke with the same cleever uppon the heade, and clave his heade, that one syde thereof fell uppon one of his shoulders, and the other syde on the other shoulder, and this I will veryfie to be trewe.' On appeal, however, it was ingeniously argued that although it had been stated that the halves of the cook's head had fallen on either shoulder, there was no averment that the cook was killed, and the judgment of the king's bench was consequently given in favour of the appellant. This slander gave rise to the curious local tradition that Holte murdered his cook in a cellar at Duddeston, 'by running him through with a spit', and was subsequently compelled, by way of punishment the red hand (i.e. the Ulster badge) on his arms."
