Sir Gervas Powell Glyn, 6th baronet
Sir Gervas's mental state was examined at an inquiry before a Master in Lunacy, who found him to be of unsound mind. This inquiry was reported in the London Telegraph on 31 January 1906:-
The state of mind of Sir Gervas Powell Glyn, Bart., was the subject of an inquiry before Master Ambrose, a Master in Lunacy, at Ewell, Epsom, yesterday, with a view to determining his capability to administer his affairs. Sir Gervas, who is the sixth baronet - the title having been created in 1759 - was born in 1862.
The inquiry was conducted at the Rectory House, Ewell, which is Sir Gervas's property, and where he has of late been residing. Mr. Chester Jones (instructed by Mr. Charles Romer) appeared in support of the petition praying for the inquiry, and Mr. Arnold Inman (instructed by Mr. Lee, of Bolton and Lee) appeared for Sir Gervas Glyn.
Dr George Henry Savage, of Henrietta-street, Cavendish-square, W., a specialist in mental disorders, said he had examined the alleged lunatic, Sir Gervas Powell Glyn, on several dates between Oct. 7 and Jan. 17, and found him suffering from an acute mental disorder. He said he was inspired either by God or the devil, and that he was obliged to do what he was directed. Once he threw himself on the floor in a crucified attitude, and lay there for some time. On the occasion of witness's last visit that patient stated that he felt himself to be of unsound mind, and that he hoped such an inquiry as the present one would be held. He was calmer at certain times than at others, but was always of unsound mind, and would ever be subject to these attacks. He was quite incapable of managing either himself or his own affairs.
Cross-examined by Mr. Inman, the witness said Sir Gervas had lucid intervals but he had never seen him really sane.
The Master: I found him apparently quite well when I saw him.
Witness said he had questioned him to ascertain whether he read or took an interest in every‑day affairs, and he replied : "I am waiting to see what my mission is going to be. It may be evolution or devolution."
The Master: If I had gone in not suspecting anything, it would not have occurred to me for a moment that he was insane.
Dr Ernest Noel Reichardt, of Dorset House, Ewell, late resident medical officer at the Banstead Asylum, said from Oct. 7 to Oct. 12 Sir Gervas was in an acute maniacal condition. The first phase was of the turbulent order. He was very violent and abusive, rushing about from place to place. Later his mood changed to one of "benevolent arrogance." He mentioned that he received communications from his dead parents.
Mr Jones: Had he a revolver? - He had at the beginning of the period during which I have attended him, but it was taken away from him.
Mr Inman: He has frequent lucid intervals? - For a week or ten days after an attack he is dazed and stunned and he does not grasp things. He is quite amenable to treatment at such times and just like a child.
But is he not quite lucid from time to time? - Yes, for a few days.
Dr Fielding Clarke said for seven weeks, dating from Oct. 26, he had Sir Gervas Glyn under his care, residing in the house with him. Up to Nov. 8 he was fairly quiet in his mind, and then an attack commenced to work up. On Sunday, Nov. 12, while out walking, he was shouting at the top of his voice, and about this time he developed a taste for strumming all day on the piano, making all sorts of discordant sounds. On the Monday morning he came down at eight o'clock to breakfast, and for an hour sat at the pianoforte banging on the keys, and causing a great deal of noise. Immediately he (witness) entered the breakfast-room the patient "went for" him, and there was rather a scene at breakfast, which ended in their both rising from the table and quitting the room. The disagreement reached its climax in the course of the morning, when he seized witness by the waistcoat and they struggled together. For two or three days subsequently he continued to be violent and abusive, and then steadily improved.
Dr Edward James Hawkins, who succeeded Dr Clarke in taking over the care of the patient, and who is at present residing in the house, said Sir Gervas abused his medical men, saying they were all fools. He gave one of the men working at the house a gold and turquoise scarf-pin, and then wanted it back, and he offered witness £500 a year as a retaining fee.
The Master: Which you jumped at, of course? (Laughter.) Witness (smiling): I accepted it.
Mr Jones said Sir Gervas left himself in the hands of the Court. The patient was at times perfectly sound in his mind, and he desired that the Court would intimate to anyone who was appointed to look after his estate that it was desirable from time to time to discuss his business affairs with him. He was particularly anxious about this.
The Master said that everything that could be done for the welfare of the patient would be done. He found that Sir Gervas was of unsound mind, and incapable either of managing himself or his affairs.
