Hon Arthur Elliot had resigned from the Durham Constitutional Association (the official Conservative and Liberal Unionist organisation in the constituency) in February 1905. Prior to his resignation John Hills had been adopted by a group of Unionists who were unhappy about Elliot's support of free trade and were determined to oppose his re-election. As a result of Elliot's resignation, the Constitutional Association adopted Hills as their official candidate while Elliot received the support of the local Liberal Association. | |||
