Peter Douglas sought election as a "Conversative Party" candidate in an attempt to confuse voters intending to vote for John Hudson, the Conservative party candidate.

Mr Blobby (aka John McLagan) advocated a four-day week, the bricking up of the Channel Tunnel and action on wobbly tables in restaurants.

Lawson McLaren was opposed to the selection of Phil Woolas as the official Labour candidate which he viewed as an imposition by the Labour Party's National Executive Committee. He had been expelled from the Labour Party in 1993.
