26 January 2011 Resignation of Gerry Adams. There was some confusion over this resignation. Gerry Adams had written to the Speaker on 21 January resigning his seat, in contravention of the standing tradition of accepting an office of profit under the Crown. On 26 January, the Speaker announced that Gerry Adams had been appointed by the Chancellor of the Exchequer as Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead and therefore, under the Disqualification Act 1975, was disqualified from sitting as an MP. However, Gerry Adams subsequently denied that he had applied for the post and "had no truck whatsoever with these antiquated and quite bizarre aspects of the British parliamentary system." Other MPs then expressed concern that the Chancellor of the Exchequer appeared to have acquired the ability to force members to resign by appointing them to offices of profit against their will. |
