23 May 1940 Archibald Ramsay was detained in Brixton Prison, London, under Defence Regulation 18b (which enabled the Home Secretary to order at his own discretion the detention of any person "of hostile origin or associations" and anyone "recently concerned in acts prejudicial to the public safety or the defence of the realm or in the propogation or instigation of such acts"). Ramsay was the leader of the Right Club, a secret society attempting to unify all right-wing (fascist) groups in the UK. He was still allowed to submit questions to the House while imprisoned, although he was immediately disowned by the local Conservative organisation. | |||||
