Austin Hopkinson was not a member of any political party but had been adopted by both the local Liberal and Conservative Associations. He was quoted, during the campaign, as saying that he had simply taken the Coalition "coupon" because he felt it would be for the good of the country to do so, but that he might vote against anything the Government did and he did not consider himself bound to support a Coalition Government.

When the General Election became imminent, the local Conservative Association was persuaded to withdraw their candidate who had been selected to contest the constituency in favour of John Higham who had been issued with the Coalition "coupon". Higham subsequently repudiated the "coupon". A group of local Conservatives annoyed at Higham's repudiation and the lack of a Conservative candidate persuaded the local branch of the National Association of Discharged Sailors and Soldiers to sponsor Robert Barker who was known to be a Conservative. During the campaign, Barker had considerable support from the Conservative Association in the constituency. Although there is no information as to which (if any) whip he accepted in the House of Commons, his voting record indicated fairly consistent support for the Coalition.
