Until 1929 Neil Maclean had been a nominee of the Govan branch of the Independent Labour Party. At a meeting held in April 1929, the ILP refused to renominate him and T A Kerr was selected as the Labour candidate. Maclean then announced that he would seek re-election as an Independent and, prior to nomination day, Kerr decided to withdraw. Maclean's candidature could not then be endorsed by the Labour Party and he fought the election as an unofficial Labour candidate. | |||
